Introduction - Concept of Stress

Short review of methods of statics

- Consider the structure in the Figure which was designed to support 30 kN load

- It consists of a boom AB with 30 X 50 mm

rectangular cross section and a rod BC with a
20 mm diameter circular cross section.
- The boom and rod are connected by pin at B
and are supported by pin and brackets at A and
C respectively.
- Next step is to draw the free body diagram
showing the all the reaction forces

Introduction - Concept of Stress

Short review of methods of statics

- We will start of by assuming that the direction
of reaction forces are unknown.
- Each of these reactions will be represented by
two components Ax and Ay at A and Cx and Cy
at C.
- We write the following three equilibrium
equations

Introduction - Concept of Stress

Short review of methods of statics

- We found out two of the four unknown
reaction forces, but can not determine other
two from these equations.

- Considering the free body diagram of the

boom AB we write the following equilibrium
equation

Analysis and design

- Since the value obtained for the is
smaller than the value of the allowable
stress in the steel used, we can conclude that
rod BC can safely support the load to which it
is subjected.
- Our analysis of the given structure should also
include the determination of the compressive
stress in boom AB, also the stresses produced
in pins and bearings. This will be discussed
later in the chapter.
