THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP
It is an interpersonal interaction between the
nurse and the patient during which the nurse
focuses on the patient’s specific needs to
promote an effective exchange of
information.

• Pre interaction phase

PRE INTERACTION PHASE

Tasks:
1. Obtaining available information about the client

2. Examining one's feelings, fears, and anxieties about


working with a particular client.
INTRODUCTORY PHASE

Tasks:
1. Create an environment for the establishment
of trust and rapport
2. Helping the client identify the problem
3. Assess the client’s needs, coping strategies, defense
mechanisms, strengths and weaknesses
WORKING PHASE

Tasks:
1. Decide on mutually agreed upon goals.

2. Establish a plan of action that satisfies you and the


client.

3. Discuss the time frame for your relationship


TERMINATION PHASE

Tasks:
1. Outline the client’s strengths and discuss the progress
of the client

2. Review areas in need of improvement

3. Discuss and develop a plan of self-care

4. Discuss any feelings that the client might have


regarding the termination of your relationship
