History Of Distributed

Systems
Introduction

Definition of Distributed Systems: A distributed

system is a collection of independent computers
that appear to the end-user as a single coherent
system. These systems can be used to share
resources such as storage and processing power,
and to coordinate the actions of multiple
computers.

Overview of the History of Distributed System
The concept of distributed systems has been
around for several decades and has evolved over
time. In this presenation , we will explore the key
milestones and developments in the history of
distributed systems, from the early days of time-
sharing systems to the modern era of cloud
computing and the Internet of Things.

Early Distributed Systems (1960s - 1980s)

The first distributed systems

appeared in the 1960s, with the
development of mainframe
computers and computer
networks.
Early networks were used
primarily for data sharing and
communication between
computers, but were not
capable of true resource
sharing.
Early Distributed Systems (1960s-1980s) Cont ....

Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS): Developed at MIT in the 1960s, CTSS

was one of the first distributed systems. It allowed multiple users to share the
resources of a single mainframe computer, by dividing the computer's time
among different users. This was a significant step forward in the development
of distributed systems, as it allowed for more efficient use of resources.
The Rise of the Internet (1990s)

World Wide Web and its impact on

distributed systems: The World Wide Web
(WWW) is a distributed system that allows for
the sharing of information and resources
across the Internet. The Web became widely
used in the 1990s, and had a significant impact
on the development of distributed systems.
The Web made it easy for people to access and
share information, and it also made it possible
for developers to create new applications that
could run on the Internet.
The Rise of the Internet (1990s) Cont....

The 1990s saw significant advancements in the field of distributed systems,

as the internet became more widely used and new technologies were
developed. The introduction of client-server architecture, the World Wide
Web (WWW), and other innovations enabled the development of new types
of distributed systems, such as email, file sharing, and online forums. The
1990s was also a time of increased commercialization of the internet, with
companies starting to offer internet-based services and products. The growth
of the internet and the development of new technologies during the 1990s
set the stage for the widespread use of distributed systems in the 21st
century.
Recent Developments (2000s - present)

In the early 2000s, the field of distributed

systems continued to evolve, with new
technologies and applications emerging. With
the growth of the internet and the increasing
availability of powerful computing resources,
the focus shifted to building distributed
systems that could handle large amounts of
data and provide high levels of performance,
scalability, and reliability.
Recent Developments (2000s - present) Cont.....

The early 2000s saw the rise of cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of
Things (IoT), which put increasing demands on distributed systems. As a result, new
technologies and architecture patterns were developed, such as distributed
databases, distributed file systems, and distributed messaging systems. In recent
years, there has been a continued focus on improving the performance, security,
and manageability of distributed systems, as well as expanding their use to new
domains and use cases. The field of distributed systems remains an active area of
research and development, and new innovations are likely to emerge in the years to
come.
In Conclusion

Distributed systems have come a long way since their inception in

the 1960s.
From the mainframe computers and early networks of the 1960s,
to the service-oriented architectures and cloud platforms of today,
distributed systems have continuously evolved to meet the
changing needs of organizations and users.
