Schrödinger’s equation not only

specified the probable region

where electrons can be located.
It also suggests a probable
arrangement of electrons in
space. The arrangement of
Main Ener electrons can be described
based on well-defined energy

Bohr’s Model
• Simplified representation of
atom and all its parts.

• Shows electron circling

around the nucleus the same
way the planets orbit the sun.
Main Energy

Levels
Main energy levels, or shell, represents a fixed distances from the nucleus where we
can find electrons. The technical term for the numbers in these energy levels is called
the principal quantum numbers. We used the letter ‘n’ represent the different levels.
• As the value of 'n' increases, the average distance of the electron from the nucleus
increases, as well as the energy of the electron.
• Sometimes you’ll see that K,L,M,N are used instead of 1,2,3, and 4
• The energy level closest to the nucleus is valued at n=1, The second energy level is
valued at n=2, The third energy level is valued at n=3, and so on
• Each energy level or shells can only hold a specific number of electrons total for that
example

 The first energy level can hold up to 2 electrons

 The second can hold up to 8 electrons
 The third can hold up to 18 electrons
 So how many electrons can the fourth energy level hold?

Levels
The simple formula that allow us to predict the number of electrons
that can fit into a shell

The formula is simply:

2n^2
• where 2n^2 is the number of maximum electrons that can fit in
the shell
•  Where n refers to the shell or energy level number
Sublevels
• A sublevel is an energy level defined by quantum theory. In chemistry, sublevels refer
to energies associated with electrons.
• Scientists give subshells letters to represent itself as subshell
• Within energy level or shell there are sublevels or subshells.
• In each subshell there is something we called orbitals
Orbitals
• Where you find the electrons
• Each orbit can hold up to 2 electrons
