Contents of the Today’s Lecture
▪ Introduction to Drawing

▪ Drawing Requirement

▪ Foundation

▪ Building Planning

▪ Residential Building Drawing

▪ Public Building

CE-206: Building,planning and Estimation

Introduction
▪ Purpose of Drawing:
▪ Drawing is the language of engineers
▪ Drawings represent reduced shape of structures and owner visualizes what is going to happen
▪ To estimate the cost and quantity of materials, drawings are MUST.

▪ Preliminary requirement of Drawing

▪ It should be neat and clean
▪ It Should be accurately drawn (scaled measurement) and free from repetitive information
▪ It should give exact information so that work can be carried out without missing measurement or
scaling
▪ Notes on the drawing should be minimum

CE-206: Building,planning and Estimation

Different Types of Drawing
▪ Preliminary Drawings are neat and proportionally dimensioned sketches, not to
scale, prepared to serve as basis for more definite drawing
▪ Diagrams are drawn either to scale or not, to show access, circulation,
installation, and functions of part of buildings in simplified way
▪ Working Drawings are required for execution of works, which includes
foundation plan, plan of different floor, longitudinal and cross section, elevations,
architectural and structural detailing. In working drawings, plan and drainage
arrangements are also provided.
▪ Location Drawing: (i) location drawings and (ii) Site Plan

Drawing Requirements
▪ Margin: Drawing sheet shall have border of 20 mm, provided by two parallel lines
5 mm apart
▪ Title Block: it facilitates obtaining uniformity and presents details
1. drawing title
2. name of organization or firm
3. drawing number
4. scale
5. name of architect and etc.

CE-206: Building,planning and Estimation

Drawing Requirements
▪ Schedule: A rectangular block is drawn immediately above the title block to express
some additional information such as size of doors, window, and their types.

▪ North Point: North point shall be clearly indicated and preferably be drawn on right
hand top corner of the drawing sheet.

▪ Selection of Scale: Selection of scale depends on degree of accuracy required of

scaled distances in preparing the drawings. Largest scale conveniently possible shall be
adopted.
▪ All important dimensions should be explicitly indicated on the drawing so that work may be
executed without restoring to scale

CE-206: Building,planning and Estimation

Drawing Requirements
▪ Scales for architectural and building drawing
▪ For working drawing : Plan, elevation and section
▪ 1cm=2m, 1cm=1m or 1cm=0.5m

▪ For large scale drawing: general details

▪ 1cm =20 cm, 1cm=10 cm

▪ For enlarged details

▪ 1cm=10 cm, 1cm=5cm, 1cm=2cm

Drawing Requirements
▪ Line Work: for good quality of drawings
the line work carries an important bearing.
The thickness and style of the lines for
various usage is given below.
