ENVIRONMENTAL
STEWARDSHIP: AN
EVERYONE’S CONCERN
CHARMEINE G. GRANDE, CPA LUCIA LAMANERO
Student Professor
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

- refers to responsible use

and protection of the
natural environment
through conservation and
sustainable practices.

- responsibility for
environmental quality
shared by all those whose
actions affect the
environment.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
Six Natural Resource Systems And Desired
Outcomes For Each One:
Air: Sustain clean and healthy air
Ecosystems: Protect and restore ecosystems
functions, goods, and services
Energy: Generate clean energy and use it efficiently
Land: Support ecologically sensitive land
management and development
Materials: Consume less, reduce waste, and shift to
environmentally preferable materials
Water: Sustain water resources to ensure quality
and availability for desired uses
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Sustainable Development
- meeting the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs. (Brundtland, 1987, p. 41)

A related concept is environmental management,

where the natural resources of the environment are
managed through policies designed to protect
natural values while providing a framework for use.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Environmental Education
- includes stewardship provides opportunities for
participants to connect with local ecosystems
and tools that can help them understand how
individual behavior impacts the environment. (
NOAA Education Council, 2015).

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Stewardship Action
- These are the activities, behaviors, decisions, and
technologies carried out by stewards--individuals,
groups, or networks of actors.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Stewardship Measure
- Quantifiable benefits to the environment that are
a result of a stewardship action or project.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Types of Stewardship
1. Restoration and Protection

Actions that assist in the recovery or

preservation of an ecosystem that have been
degraded, damaged or destroyed and allow that
ecosystem to evolve with minimal human influence
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Types of Stewardship
3. Community Awareness

Actions that inform others in an effort to

convince them to take action to address
community-level environmental issues
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Types of Stewardship
2. Everyday Choices

Actions that reduce resource inputs and

emissions per unit of output through technological
change and consumer purchasing, use and disposal
behaviors
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Types of Stewardship
4. Civic Action

Actions that inform public or organizational

policy decisions that can improve environmental
outcomes for many people or organizations at
once
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Types of Stewardship
5. Stewardship Science

Actions that collect and report monitoring data

in an ecosystem that inform management of the
natural resource.

Environmental Stewardship Theory

Some basic concepts of environmental
management and ethics, especially as they apply to
tourism, include carrying capacity, footprint,
tragedy of the commons, and the tourism paradox.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Environmental Stewardship Theory

1. Carrying capacity

“the average maximum number of individuals of

a given species that can occupy a particular habitat
without permanently impairing the productive
capacity of that habitat” (Rees, 2001, p. 229).

2. Ecological Footprint

is essentially a tool to analyze the impact of a

population on Earth (Rees, 2001).

3. Tragedy of the Commons

an economic theory first proposed by Garrett

Hardin in 1968, which states that if individuals are
given the chance to overuse a common property,
they will, in order to realize the maximum personal
benefits

change their minds cannot change
anything.”
