ASSESSMENT OF SENSITIVITY OF FARMERS TOWARDS JUNAGADH AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY

INTRODUCTION
 India is primarily an agriculture-based country and it is the main source of livelihood for over
80 per cent of the rural people in India.
 The cradle of success, besides government policies and high receptivity of the farming
community, has been the establishment of institutions of higher agricultural education.
 The Gujarat Agricultural University was established on 1 st June 1972. in 2004, GAU divided
into 4 state agricultural universities viz., SDAU, AAU, JAU and NAU.
 Junagadh Agricultural University's vision is to search new frontiers of Agricultural Sciences by
undertaking basic research to breakthrough new areas of research and development of excellent
human resources by imparting innovative technological services to the farming community and
making Gujarat and India agriculturally prosperous.
 To communicate the agricultural technologies to many farmers at a time, JAU has
organized/participated in different agricultural fairs and exhibitions. The profile of JAU and the
latest technologies developed by the University were displayed.
 Interaction between scientists and the farmers was also organized. The literature on the latest
technologies was distributed to the farming community during such fairs and exhibitions.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

 State Agricultural Universities play a major role in the poverty alleviation of the farmers and
economic development of farmers living in rural areas through education, research and
extension.
 In the present context of globalization and to meet the changing needs of farmers SAUs play a
major role in the transfer of innovations and technologies through the use of ICT tools and
techniques.
 In this context the results of the present study are useful to know the attitude, awareness and
extent of utilization of the technologies and information provided by the Junagadh Agricultural
University, there by helps us to know the gaps in the awareness and utilization of the resources
provided by JAU and also helps to know the relationship between the profile of farmers and
their sensitivity towards JAU.
 The study helps to identify the constraints and to seek valuable suggestions from farmers for
expanding the resources utilization of JAU for the betterment of farming.
 The results is helpful to the policymakers, academicians, university officials who are involved in
programme formulation and implementations to the farming community for providing sound and
competitive agricultural policies for the upliftment of the farming community.

PRACTICAL UTILITY:

 The Junagadh Agricultural University believes in harnessing the power of science and
innovation for increasing the prosperity of society in the last 16 years. JAU has been
given many efforts for farmer’s welfare.
 In this regard, there has not been conducted any systematic study till today. Keeping all
these things in view, the researcher has decided to conduct a study about farmers’
awareness, extent of utilization of resources and attitude towards JAU functions.
 Accordingly, the study entitled “ASSESSMENT OF SENSITIVITY OF THE
FARMERS TOWARDS JUNAGADH AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY” was
undertaken with the following objectives:
ASSESSMENT OF SENSITIVITY OF FARMERS TOWARDS JUNAGADH AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1. To study the profile of the farmers

2. To study the sensitivity of the farmers towards Junagadh Agricultural University
3. To ascertain the relationship between the profile of the farmers and their
sensitivity towards Junagadh Agricultural University
4. To find out the constraints faced by the farmers in the utilization of resources of
Junagadh Agricultural University
5. To seek suggestions from the farmers to create better sensitivity towards
Junagadh Agricultural University

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
AREA OF THE STUDY
The present investigation will be carried out in the jurisdiction of Junagadh Agricultural
University. There are three districts purposively selected in the jurisdiction of Junagadh
Agricultural University namely Junagadh, Porbandar and Gir Somnath. Because, these
districts are located near Junagadh Agricultural University.

RESEARCH DESIGN
This study will be confined to ex-post facto research design as the independent
variables were already operated in the study area. Kerlinger (1976) stated that ex-post facto
research design is worthy to apply when the independent variables have already been acted
upon.

ASSESSMENT OF SENSITIVITY OF FARMERS TOWARDS JUNAGADH AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY

• To find out overall sensitivity towards Junagadh Agricultural University the

following formula was used.
• (R1/M1) × W1 + (R2/M2) × W2 +…+ (Rn/Mn) × Wn
• Where,
• R1, R2 ….. Rn = Score received by respondents for each indicator
• M1, M2 ….Mn = Maximum score one can get for each indicator
• W1, W2 …Wn = Weightage score of each indicator received from the
• expert
The overall sensitivity index will be calculated for each respondent with the help of
the above formula. Respondents will be classified into five groups as under:
