COGNITIVE LANGUAGE LEARNING
APPROACH (CALLA)

Teacher’s role Student’s role

• Practice
• Preparation
• Evaluate

• Presentation • Expande.
ADVANTAGES:
 Promotes the development of academic and linguistic language skills.
 They are taught to use learning strategies derived from a cognitive learning model to
help them understand and retain both language skills and concepts.
 Integrate learning strategies into academic activities.
 The calla model is recursive rather than linear and thus teachers and students have
the option of revisiting the previous instruction phases.
 It seeks to help students learn English and be more successful academically by
providing them with opportunities to learn appropriate content.
DISADVANTAGES
:
 It is designed for limited English proficient students as it was created specifically for
limited English speaking and writing students.
 Although teacher instruction may be pending, most teachers use the same strategies
and activities over and over again.

 Teachers using CALLA must first prepare students for learning using this strategy by
finding out more about their background and observing how students previously
approached an academic task.
