2. Conformity (adherence to moral code of the group).

EDUCATION IN PRIMITIVE TIME

Function of education to society:


Socialization
-process by which individuals internalize the norms and
values of society and so social and cultural continuity are
attained. This is informal education in action.

Pre-Hispanic Period/Pre-colonial period

No established formal schooling.


No formal preparation for teachers too.
Parents or tribal leaders – served as teachers at home (Baybaylan –
Katalonan).
Livelihood / household chores – how to be a good husband/ wife.

Spanish period
oFormal and organized but authoritarian
oHighly religion –centered (songs, doctrine , confession ,
communion).
oTeachers –Spanish missionaries.
oFree public school system- established (Educational Decree of
1863) (Boys and girls- separate schools).

The American Regime
o Americans promoted democratic ideals and democratic way of life.
o The schools maintained by the Spaniards for more than 3 centuries
were reopened on August 29, 1989 by the secretary of the interior.
o Free and compulsory elementary education was established (Malolos
Constitution).
o Americans soldiers – served as the first teachers and the Thomasites
arrived on the Phil in 1909.
o University of the Philippines – first state school of university status.

The American Regime
Depart of Public Instruction
set up a three-level school:
1. Seven-year elementary curri
( 3 primary, 4 intermediate)
2. Four level junior college
3. Four-year college program

The Commonwealth Period
Institute of private education in order to observe private
schools.
Formal adult education was also given.
E.O. 134 in 1936 (Pres. Manuel Quezon )-designating tagalog
as the National language.
E.O. 217- Quezon Code of Ethics was taught in schools.
E.O. 263 in 1940- required the teaching of the Filipino in
senior year of all high schools and in all years in normal
school.

The Commonwealth Period

Education Act of 1940 provided…


• Reduction of 7 elementary years to 6 years.
• Fixing the school entrance age at 7.
• National support for elementary education.
• Compulsory attendance of primary children enrolled in
grade 1.
• Adoption of double- single sessions in the primary
grade with one teacher one class assignment of
intermediate teachers.

Post Colonial Philippines
 Education aimed at the
realization of democratic ideals

 The civil service eligibility of
teachers was made permanent in
pursuant to RA 1079 in June 5,
1954.
 A daily flag ceremony was made
compulsory in all schools (RA
1265 – June 11, 1955).

Japanese Occupation
 Eradication of the idea of reliance upon western
states.
 Fostering a new Filipino culture based on the Click icon to add picture

over-emphasis on materialism.

Philippines and the termination of the use of

POST-COLONIAL PHILIPPINES

• Education aimed: full realization of the democratic


ideals of life.
• Writings of Rizal, Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo, were included in the curriculum in all
levels.
• Elementary education was nationalized and matriculation
fees were abolished.
• Magna carta for teachers was passed into laws by virtue
of RA 4670.
