What are the Methods for Extracting
Metals?
Two main methods used to extract metals from their ores are:
Using electricity to decompose the molten metal compound
Reacting the metal compound with carbon
3. The blast furnace gets its name from the hot air that is blasted into it to burn
the coke (carbon).
Its cost
Steel and Its Uses
Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon with small amounts of
other elements.
Steel is strong and tough.
It can be bent and stretched without shattering.
Steel and Its Uses
Steel is made by first removing
all the impurities in the iron.
This is done by blowing oxygen
gas into molten iron to change all
the impurities into oxides.
The oxides are combined with
lime (calcium oxide) and removed
as slag.
The correct amounts of carbon
and other metals are then added to
the iron to make steel.
What are the different types of steel?

Answers
1. (a) Aluminium has a low density thus allowing javelins to be lightweight and
therefore be thrown further.
(b) Gold is very resistant to corrosion.
(c) Mercury has a low melting point (~-39 C) and is a liquid at room
temperature. It is sensitive to small changes in temperature.
(d) Steel is strong and cheap.
(e) Copper is resistant to corrosion and is not too expensive. It does not
react with water.
(f) Aluminium is malleable (can be easily formed into foil) and is a good
conductor of heat.
2. (a) Iron
(b) This is stainless steel.
3. The hulls of ships need to be strong thus steel is used in making them.
However, if the whole ship were to be made of steel, it may submerge too
low into the water since it needs to displace more water in order to float.
Thus, the upper parts of the ship are made of aluminium alloy, which is
lighter in weight.
How much metal is left?
As metal ores take a long time to form, they are considered a
non-renewable resource on Earth.
Conserving Our Reserves of Metals:
Recycling
One way to make metal reserves last longer is to use other
materials in their place.
An important way to make metal reserves last longer is to
recycle them.
Metal objects which are no longer needed are collected and
then melted to produce blocks of clean metal.
This is then used to make new objects.
Benefits of recycling
Recycling helps to conserve metals, especially valuable
metals.
Recycling saves the cost of extracting new metals.
Recycling can be beneficial to the environment.
Some problems with recycling
Metals are only recycled if it is
economical to do so.
2. Steel cans are separated from the aluminium cans with the aid of an
electromagnet.

3. Gold is a valuable metal and can be sold for a high price, and is also
expensive to extract. Copper is a cheap metal and can be easily extracted
from the ground.
4. Potassium is too reactive. It reacts quickly with air and water and thus its
compounds are not worth collecting. Aluminium is recycled because it does
not corrode into compounds and only needs to be melted into clean blocks.
