IC Memory and Processors # 3

T
Q: What is computer memory

Ans: Computer Memory

Computer memory, device that is used to store data or programs (sequences of
instructions) on a temporary or permanent basis. The processor executes (process)
these instructions to get the results.

Q: What Are the types of Computer memory ?

Ans: There are three types of Memory

- RAM (Random Access memory (RAM)
- Read only Memory (ROM)
- Flash Memory

T
Q: What is RAM ?

Ans:
- Ram is essential part of computer. It loads software (programs) from
secondary storage (HDD/SSD)
- The processor then fetches software instructions from memory and
execute (Translate and produce results)

T
Q: Features of RAM ?

Ans:
S.NO Features of RAM
1 RAM is volatile, means loses data once power goes off
2. Temporary storage
3 Upgradable
4 Holds current running programs like windows, Ms Word, paint etc

T
Q: Impact of Ram on the user

Ans:
RAM stores the programs that are in use. The more Ram size the more
programs user can run at the same time.
If the RAM size is high there will be no swapping of programs from RAM to
HDD/SSD so the processing speed will be faster.
IF the RAM size is low then the operating system creates a virtual memory
using the secondary storage like Hard disk. As the HDD speed is very slow as
compared to RAM so the speed or performance of the system becomes slow.
If the RAM is low swapping of files reduce the performance of the system.

Q: What is ROM ?

Ans:
- ROM stands for read only Memory
- Unlike RAM, ROM is non-volatile memory
- It retains the data even computer is switched off

Q: ROM Types?

Ans:
- PROM (Programmable once read only memory )

- EPROM ( Erasable and programmable Read only memory )

- EEPROM (Electrically erasable programmable read only Memory)

Q: Compare ROM and RAM?

Ans:

1 Volatile memory Non-Volatile memory

2 Loses all data when power is switched off Retains data even the power is off

3 Holds current running programs Holds system boot instructions

Flash Memory
Flash memory is type of EEPROM. It is
nonvolatile Memory. It does not have any
moving parts. It has a fast access time and
low power consumption.

TProcessor
A Processor is made up of one or more
central Processing Units (CPUs). These
carry out software instructions. Processor
is made up of more than one CPU each
CPU is referred to as a core like
Dual core
Quad core
Octa core

TMulti Core Processor
A processor which consists of more than
one core and each core can run more
slowly than in a single core processor so
generate less heat.

Process of fetching a program instructions
from memory, decoding the actions
required by the instructions and then
executing those instructions.
