INTRODUCTION OF THE FIVE SENSES
Humans detect these senses with the help
of the sense organs and their receptor
cells.

Brain
TOUCH: SKIN
The skin is the largest organ in the body. It contains
receptors that detect:
● Temperature
● Pain
● Pressure
● Touch
Receptors are found in different concentrations in skin of
various locations.
TASTE: TONGUE
Taste buds on the tongue are the organs for taste i.e the receptors for taste are located in
these taste buds.
Known as the gustatory cells.

The taste buds are found on the top and sides of the tongue and in some parts of the lining
of the throat.

There are four basic taste receptors:

• Sweet
• Salt
• Sour
• Bitter

However there is also a fifth taste called Umami, also known as monosodium glutamate.
The Flavour of food is a combination of taste, smell, texture and temperature.
Receptors are stimulated by chemicals dissolved in food, so different falvours stimulate
different receptors.
SMELL: NOSE
The roof of the nasal cavity has about twenty million neurons
that detects smell.
These neurons respond to about fifty different chemicals in air.

Smell receptors are extremely sensitive. They also, adjust very

rapidly to a smell and stop responding.
SIGHT: EYE
The eye is the organ for sight/vision. It has speciflised cells & receptors to
detect light.
Rods Cones
120 million per eye 6 million per eye

Diseases/Disorders associated with sight

Cataracts Blindness

Causes: Aging and injury (that changes the Age related macular degeneration,
tissue that makes up the eyes lens) diabetes and you can be born with
it.
Prevention: Regular eye examinations, wearing You cant prevent blindness
sunglasses, healthy diet and

Treatment
Surgery Corneal transplant; a provider may
be able to replace your scarred
cornea.
Retinal surgery: a provider may be
able to repair damaged retinal tissue
with surgery or a laser. Other forms
are not able to be cured.
HEARING: EAR
The functions of the ear are hearing and balance.

The ear is composed of 3 sections:

• The outer ear; filled with air
• The middle ear; filled with air
• The inner ear; filled with fluid called lymph

Vestibular apparatus: three semi circular canals (horizontal, anterior, posterior)
