LAWS OF MOTION

Types of Forces
Contact Forces
• Normal Force
• Tension Force
• Frictional Force
Non-contact Forces
• Gravitational Forces
• Electromagnetic Forces
• Strong Forces
• Weak Forces
EXAMPLE
Two people are pushing a stalled car. The mass of the car is 1850 kg.
One person applies a force of 275 N to the car, while the other applies a
force of 395 N. Both forces act in the same direction. A third force of
560 N also acts on the car, but in a direction opposite to that in which
the people are pushing. This force arises because of friction and the
extent to which the pavement opposes the motion of the tires. Find the
acceleration of the car.
EXAMPLE
• All objects are attracted to the Earth.
• The attractive force exerted by the Earth on an object is called the
gravitational force.
• This force is directed toward the center of the Earth and its
magnitude is called the weight of the object.
EXAMPLE
Suppose the mass of the spacecraft in the figure is 11000 kg and that
the mass of the astronaut is 92kg. In addition, assume that the
astronaut pushes with force of P = +36 N on the spacecraft. Find the
accelerations of the spacecraft and the astronaut.
• If the acceleration of an object modeled as a particle is zero, the
object is treated with the particle in equilibrium model.
• If an object experiences an acceleration, its motion can be analyzed
with the particle under a net force model.
