Make me, O Lord, thy Spining Wheele compleate.
Thy Holy Worde my Distaff make for mee.
Make mine Affections thy Swift Flyers neate
And make my Soule thy holy Spoole to bee.
My Conversation make to be thy Reele
And reele the yarn thereon spun of thy Wheele.
Make me thy Loome then, knit therein this Twine:
And make thy Holy Spirit, Lord, winde quills:
Then weave the Web thyselfe. The yarn is fine.
Thine Ordinances make my Fulling Mills.
Then dy the same in Heavenly Colours Choice,
All pinkt with Varnisht Flowers of Paradise.
Then cloath therewith mine Understanding, Will,
Affections, Judgment, Conscience, Memory
My Words, and Actions, that their shine may fill
My wayes with glory and thee glorify.
Then mine apparell shall display before yee
That I am Cloathd in Holy robes for glory.

ANALYSIS
1.What is the theme portrayed by the poem?
2.What is the form, rhyme scheme and meter used in the poem?

3.What are the Figurative language used?

THEME
The main theme found in "Huswifery" is desperation. The author
apparently has decided that he is going to stop living life for his own
desire, but instead give it to God to be worked through. His purpose
in writing the poem was to be a letter to God, a written form of
prayer.
FORM
‘Huswifery’ is a three-stanza poem that is separated into sets of six lines,
known as sestets.

The Petrarchan sonnet- contains fourteen lines of poetry. The lines are divided into an
eight-line subsection (called an octave) followed by a six-line subsection (called a
sestet). The octave follows a rhyme scheme of ABBA ABBA.

METER
“Huswifery” is written in iambic pentameter. This means that most
lines consist of five poetic feet, with each foot made of an
unstressed syllable followed by a stress syllable.
FIGURATIVE
LANGUAGE
Extended Metaphor- is a metaphor that unfolds across multiple
lines or even paragraphs of a text, making use of multiple
interrelated metaphors within an overarching one.

Apostrophe- figure of speech that is used to address someone who

is absent or already dead. It can also be used to address an abstract
quality or idea, and even a non-living object.
