A kenning is a way of describing
something using clues rather than

just saying what it is.


Each line is two words long.
It is is a metaphoric expression that replaces
a name or a noun. Often it is a compound of
two words and the words are hyphenated.
Kennings are usually associated with Old
Norse, Icelandic, and Anglo Saxon poetry.
The word kenning comes from the
Viking phrase kenna eitt við.

That means
"to express a thing in terms of another"
It is not as hard as it seems.

First think of something you want to


be the subject of your Kenning.

Such as…
Think about what the subject does….
