COLLISIONS

A collision is when two

objects strike each other over
a short space of time or the
sudden forceful coming
together in direct contact of
two bodies.
INELASTIC COLLISIONS
• An inelastic demand is such a type of
collision that takes place between two
objects in which some energy is lost.
• In the case of inelastic collisions,
momentum is conserved but the kinetic
energy is not conserved.
EXAMPLE:
• Car crash
• Shooting a bullet into a block of
wood.
•Archery
FORMULA:

v = (m1v1 + m2v2)
(m1 + m2)
INELASTIC COLLISION SP#01
Shakira is going by a slippery snowy hill. She
has a mass of 20kg, and she is sliding the hill
at a velocity of 5m/s. Shakira's elder brother
has a mass of 30kg. Her brother is moving
slower with a velocity of 2m/s. Shakira collides
to her brother. Then both of them keep going
down the hill as one unit. Calculate the
resulting velocity of Shakira.
Given:
m1=
20kg
m2 =
30kg v1
= 5m / s
v2 =
Formula: v= (m1)(v1) + (m2)(v2)
2m / s (m1 + m2)
v=?
SOLUTION:
v = (20 kg) (5 m/s) + (30 kg) (2 m/s)
(20 kg + 30 kg)
v = (100 kg. m/s) + (60 kg. m/s)
50 kg
v = 160 kg. m/s
/
50 kg

v = 3.20 m/s
INELASTIC COLLISION SP#02
A 0.032 kg bullet strikes a 5 kg block
of wood that is initially at rest and
embeds in the wood. If the
subsequent velocity of the block is 3.8
m/s, calculate the initial velocity of
the bullet.
Given: v1 = ?
m1 = v2i = 0 m/s
0.032 kg vf = 3.8 m/s

m2 =5kg
Formula: m1v1i + m2v2i = (m1 + m2) vf
v1i = vf (m1 + m2 ) - m2v2
m1
SOLUTION:
v1i = 3.8 m/s (0.032 kg + 5 kg) - (5 kg) (0 m/s)
0.032 kg
v1i = 3.8 m/s ( 5.032 kg)
0.32 kg
v1i = 19.12 kg. m/s
0.032 kg
v1i = 597.55 m/s
COEFFICIENT OF RESTITUTION
The coefficient of restitution (also
denoted by e), is the ratio of the
final to initial relative speed
between two objects after they
collide.
In equation,
e = v2' - v1'
v1 - v2
• The values of e range from 0-1.
• Perfectly elastic collisions, e = 1.
• Perfectly inelastic collisions, e = 0
SAMPLE PROBLEM #01

A ball dropped on a floor from a

height of 1.5m bounces back to a
height 0.85m. What is the
coefficient of restitution?
Formula:
e= v2' - v1
v1 - v2
e = √h'
h
e = √0.85
√1.5 m
e = 0.75
SAMPLE PROBLEM # 0 2
A ball is dropped on the ground
from the height of 1m. The
coefficient of restitution is 0.6.
Determine the height to which
the ball will rebound?
SOLUTION:

h = e²
h = 0.6²
h = 0.36 m
