PROBLEMS INVOLVING
SYSTEMS
OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN
TWO VARIABLES
Today’s Objectives
 recall how to translate phrases into mathematical
expressions/equations
 solve problems of systems of linear equations in two
variables
LET’S EXPLORE!
Translate the following phrases into mathematical
expressions/equations.
1. the sum of x and y
2. 12 larger than x
3. 11 less than y
4. the difference of x and y is z
5. y is four more than x
6. x is seven less than y
EXAMPLE
Solve for what is asked in each problem.
1. I have two numbers whose sum is 90. When twice the smaller number is subtracted
from the larger number the difference is 48. What are the numbers?
EXAMPLE
Solve for what is asked in each problem.
2. Vince is seven years older than Michael. The sum of their ages is 49. How old is
each of them?
EXAMPLE
Solve for what is asked in each problem.
3. Two angles are complementary. The larger angle is nine less than twice the smaller
angle. Find the measures of the two angles.
EXAMPLE
Solve for what is asked in each problem.
4. A collection of 105 coins consists of 1-peso and 5-peso coins. If the total value is
205.00 pesos, how many of each kind are there?
IT’S YOUR TURN!
Solve for what is asked in each problem.
1. John is nine years younger than Sharon. The sum of their ages is 41. How old is each
of them?
2. The number of chocolate bars added to twice the number of candies is 33. The number
of chocolate bars is six less than the number of candies. How many of each kind are
there?
3. A rectangle has the perimeter of 42 m. The length is 1 m longer than the width. Find
the dimensions of the rectangle.
4. Two pencils and one eraser cost 20 pesos in all. If the cost of six pencils is 12 pesos
more than the cost of five erasers, how much is the cost of each kind?
5. There are 10 farm animals consisting of goats and ducks. If there are 26 animal legs,
how many of each kind are there?
ANSWER KEY

1. John is 16 years old while Sharon is 25 years old.

2. There are 7 chocolate bars and 13 candies.
