Body Directional Terms

• Anterior-
– toward the front or abdominal surface of the body
• Posterior –
– toward the back of the body
• Dorsal –
– back surface ( bipeds)
• Ventral –
– front surface (bipeds), bell surface quadruped
• Superior –
– toward the head ( upper portion of the body above another structure)
• Inferior –
– away from the head ( a part lower than another structure)
• Medial –
– toward the midline of the body
• Lateral –
– away from the midline of body ( to the side; example your ears is on the lateral surface of the body)
• Distal –
– part of an extremity that is farther from the point of attachment of the extremity to the trunk (example
the wrist is distal to the elbow)
• Proximal -
– part of an extremity that is nearer the point of attachment of the extremity to the trunk ( example the

• Longitudinal –
– any cut that is along the longest axis of the body
• Sagittal –
– a longitudinal cut that divides the body into right and left
portions
• Mid sagittal –
– a sagittal cut that divides the body into equal right and left halves
• Coronal -
– a longitudinal cut that divides the body into anterior and
posterior portions
• Transverse –
– a cut that divides the body at right angles to its long axis; in
(bipeds superior from the inferior)
