Blowout preventer equipment

 Blowout prevention equipment are composed of all systems required to operate the blowout preventers
under varying rig and well conditions. These systems are BOPs, BOP control unit, choke manifold, kill
manifold etc.

Primary
functions

Provide means to Allow controlled

Confine well fluid Means to hang off
add fluid to the volume of fluid to
to the wellbore string
wellbore be withdrawn

Testing of BOP stack
There are 2 types of tests to be conducted on BOP stack

a) Function Test:-

• To check the closing time of each BOP which is to be within prescribed limit.
• To check the condition of the accumulators whether having pre-charge pressure.

b) Pressure Test:-

• To check the integrity of the entire joint in BOP stack, seals and valves.
• A cup tester or a plug tester is used.
Function test :-

• To be done in every 7days.

For successful function test
• To be conducted when the drill string is inside the casing.
• Pressures in the BOPCU Closing time for

accumulator pressure - 3000 psi •Blind Ram / Pipe Ram < 30 sec

annular pressure - 1500 psi

manifold pressure - 1500 psi Closing time for Annular BOP

• Close blind Ram and do the same (without pipe in the hole). •Below 18-3/4 bore < 30 sec

• Close pipe Ram and note down the time and the final pressure. •For 18-3/4 bore < 45 sec

• Close annular BOP and note down the time and the final pressure. and above

• Close HCR valve and do the same.

Accumulator pressure should be
greater than 1200 psi
BOP control unit
A device that stores hydraulic fluid under pressure in special containers and provides a
method to open and close the blowout preventers quickly and reliably
Pressure Test :-

• To be done in every 21 days.

2 pressure tests –
i) Low pressure test
ii) High pressure test

i) Low pressure test :-

• All the blowout and hydraulically operated valves

should be pressure tested at 200 – 300 psi.
• Clean water should be used as test fluid. Plug tester
• To check the engagement of top seal at low pressure.
ii) High pressure test :-

• Should be tested to at least 70% of the preventer

rated working pressure.
• McEvoy valve should be open so that if the
tester fails then it does not effect the casing.
• Top up the well head with water before the test.
• Close the BOPs and pressurize through PTU.
• Hold and check if there is any pressure drop.
• The stable high pressure should be maintained at
least for 5mins.
PTU
Important points for a shift-in-charge
 Safety first
• PPE is must.
• Ensure safety near the cellar area.
• Alert everyone working near the cellar area
 When placing the BOP in position, be sure that
• Groove of casing head housing/ spool is cleaned.
• Proper ring joint gasket and correct size of nuts and bolts
are used.
 Check for any surface line leakages.
 Check for any leakages in the BOP stack during tests.
 During testing ensure that no one is present near the wellhead.
