Pagla Sewage treatment Plant

 The first conventional sewage treatment plant with 4 facultative lagoons

 Rehabilitated in 1992 to treat a capacity of 120,000 m3 /day sewage.

 The plant has 49,000 domestic sewer

connections, 778 km of sewer line of different
diameter, 20 sewer lift stations, 1 central pump
station and 3 truck interceptor sewers.
Outline of Pagla Sewage Treatment Plant

 Name : Pagla Sewage Treatment Plant

 Location: Pagla, Dhaka city, Dhaka. 8 km away at the
southeast of down town Dhaka City and
approximately 1km north of Buriganga
(23°40'50.71"N and 90°27'13.96"E )
 Site Area : 95.5 hectare (236 Acres)

 Discharge point: Buriganga River

 The treatment plant was designed for a waste water with a BOD

Maintenance
Pagla sewage wastewater treatment plant is operated in 3 shifts.

Proper maintenance is necessary. Otherwise desired benefits can’t be taken from the plan

Proper maintenance of facultative lagoon must be maintained

To kill pathogenic organisms, the water leaving from the plant is

sterilized by liquid chlorine.

Laboratory

A laboratory room with necessary facilities exists in the administrative building of

the Pagla STP to analyze the different parameters to assess the effluent quality.
Samples are taken either once a week (for BOD) or every alternate days (for SS) at :
 Distribution Chamber
 Outlet of Primary Sedimentation Tank
 Outlet of ‘A’ and ‘B’ lagoons.

Treatment Performance

BOD5 has high concentration from November-May but the concentration of BOD5
is low from June-October.
Some flaws and recommendations

The sewage treatment plant at Pagla operates under a flow considerably

lower than the design capacity.

From the recorded data it can be seen that the quality of incoming flow is very strong compared to the
design condition.

The treatment plant serves one-third demand of Dhaka

city

Maintenance cost is so high also laboratory facilities are not adequate.

To improve,
Some flaws and recommendations

Immediate cleaning of the lagoons

Using the sludge for productive purpose is highly recommended

Industrial discharges its effluent to the city sewerage network, it must comply with the
environmental quality standard of bangladesh.
