Answer of Number 1(a)
First, to find the reactions at points A and E, we need to draw the Free Body
Diagram of cylindrical rods of AE in order to find the reactions from Support A and
E. This FBD is shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1
This is an indeterminate problem, so the solution could be carried out from the
condition that the deformation of bars equals to zero. This problem could be solved
by applying the superposition method and considering the deformation caused by
the given loads and the deformation caused by the redundant reaction at E , thus .
I choose to solve this problem by using this method.

In order to find the deformation caused by the given loads, the bars are divided
into four sections as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2
From the problem, it is given that:
and
and
From FBD in Figure 2, it is given that:
Then, find the deformation each of the four parts to obtain deformation caused by
the given loads, ,
In order to find the deformation caused by the redundant reaction at E, the bars
are divided into two sections as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3

From FBD in Figure 3, it is given that:

Then, find the deformation each of the two parts to obtain deformation caused by
the redundant reaction at E, ,

To find reaction at E, , use ,

To find reaction at A, , use Force Analysis on FBD in Figure 1,
Answer of Number 1(b)
To find the deflection of point C, use the formula , but only limited to the steel
road.

Substitute the value of into the equation,

Thus, the deflection of point C is,

Convert the unit of deflection of point C from m to mm,

Answer of Number 1
For the loading shown and knowing that and ,
a) the reaction at A is and the reaction at E is ,
b) the deflection of point C is .
Number 2
Answer of Number 2(a)
To find the radius of of the fillets for which the same maximum stress occurs at the
hole A and at the fillets, we need to solve the corresponding maximum allowable
Load P if the allowable stress is 100 MP.

Figure 4
From the problem, it is given that:

From Figure 4, it is given that:

First, find the stress concentration factor for the hole, ,

From stress concentration factors for flat bars under axial loading, independent of
the size and material of the member graph in Figure 5, find the estimated ,
Figure 5

It can be observed from the graph in Figure 5, that:

Second, find the value of average stress for the hole using the formula of ,
Third, find the net area of the object for the hole,

Now, find the corresponding maximum allowable Load, P,
