Consonants
When a word ends in a
consonant sound and
the following sound
begins with the same
consonant sound
THE SOUNDS ARE LINKED
rather than saying the
consonant sound
twice you only
pronounce it once.
Remember to hold the
consonant sound of the last
word and release it after the
beginning of the second word.

some might = sam-ait

yes or no= ye-ser-no
Examples: snack time = snakt-aim
Link Consonant to vowel

When a word ends with

a consonant is followed
by a word beginning
with a vowel, we link the
consonant to the vowel
in the next word
Why do we do this?

The final consonant

time off = ti-moff
will be easier to say. date of = da-tof
Your speech will keep up = kee-pup
sound more natural.
at a = a-ta
Link Vowel to Vowel

When a word ends with a

vowel sound and the
. next word begins with a
vowel the words are
linked with a soft W or Y
sound.
When the first word
ends in an a, e or i Example:
[ eɪ / i: / aɪ ] vowel
sound our lips are
wide, then a y is
pay all = pay yall
inserted at the the end = theyend
beginning of the lie on = lieyon
next word
When the first word
ends in a vowel sound
O or U[ əʊ / u: ] our lips
are round. A W is
inserted at the
beginning of the next
word.

Example: go out = go Wout

too often = tooWoften
