What Basketball?

BASKETBALL is a team sport in which two

teams, most commonly of five players each,
opposing one another on a
rectangular court, compete with the primary
objective of shooting a basketball through
the defender's hoop.
THE
INVENTION
OF
BASKETBALL
• Basketball was invented by Dr.
James Naismith in December 1891
in Springfield, Massachusetts.

• Dr. Naismith was a college professor

who wanted to create a game that his
physical education classes could play
inside during the long winters.
• The first games used peach
baskets nailed to the wall for firms.

• The first ball was soccer ball.

• The objective of the game was to throw
the basketball into the fruit baskets
nailed to the lower railing of the gym
balcony.

• He developed the original rules on

December 21 1891, the same day he
asked his class to play a match in the
Armory Street court: 9 versus 9
• "Naismith Game" – proposed game
name by one of his students.

• Every time a point was scored, the

game was halted so the janitor could
bring out a ladder and retrieve the ball.
• Women's basketball began in the fall of 1892
at Smith College. Senda Berenson, recently
hired as a young "physical culture" director
at Smith, taught basketball to her students,
hoping the activity would improve their
physical health

• The 13 original rules published in January 15

1892 in The Triangle, the school newspaper
of Springfield College.
• Year 1895 when basketball introduced to
high school

• November 7 1896 –First Professional Game

(Trenton vs. Brooklyn)

• 1898 when basketball spreads into

universities and Kansas University hire
Naismith to be their coach.

• In 1906, the peach baskets were

finally replaced by metal hoops with
backboards
• Year 1907, Naismith quits coaching in Kansas
University.

• World basketball was growing, but it was on June

18, 1932 that a real international organization was
formed, to coordinate tournaments and teams: that
day, Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia,
Portugal, Romania and Switzerland founded the
International Basketball Federation.

• In 1936, basketball became an official sport and

November 7, 1936 when it was introduced in
Olympics
• NBL (National Basketball League)
started with thirteen previously
independent teams in 1937. The
league began as the
Midwest Basketball Conference in
1935, but changed its name in 1937
• In 1946 a group of executives in New York
City formed another new professional
basketball league, known as the Basketball
Association of America (BAA). This new
circuit was a direct competitor with the new
NBL, with teams in New York City; Boston,
Massachusetts; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania;
Chicago, Illinois; and Detroit, Michigan.
• August 3, 1949 – NBL join the BAA

• National Basketball Association (NBA),

professional basketball league formed in
the United States in 1949

•  The first balls made specifically for

basketball were brown, and it was only
in the late 1950s that Tony Hinkle,
introduced the orange ball that is now
in common use.
