MOVEMENT OF PLATES AND

FORMATION OF FOLDS AND

FAULTS
JAZZREL JUN R. PALCONE, LPT
OBJECTIVES:

1. Identify the three types of plate

movements from a short excerpt.
2. Expound three types of plate movement
based on plate tectonic theory using an
illustration.
ACTIVITY #1

associated with plate tectonics.Then, put
the remaining words and write your
understanding below the box.

UNDERSTANDING
PLATE TECTONICS THEORY

• In this new model, the

lithosphere is made up of
several huge moving pieces
called plates. The theory of
plate tectonics uses these
plates to explain movements of
the crust.
• The continents and seafloor
are moving because they are
being carried on the plates.
• The plates that carry
seafloor are called ocean
plates.
• Continental plates carry the
continents.
PLATE MOVEMENTS

1. DIVERGENT BOUNDARIES
2. CONVERGENT
BOUNDARIES
3. TRANSFORM BOUNDARIES
1. DIVERGENT BOUNDARIES

• a boundary between two

plates that are moving
apart.
• seafloor spreading takes
place at divergent
boundaries.
2. CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES

• a boundary between plates that

are moving toward each other.
• when two continental plates collide,
their edges may strike head on. the
impact of such a collision crumples
the plate edges. The rocks of the
continents buckle and fold forming
mountains.
When two ocean plates collide, their
edges buckle downward, forming a
deep trench. In a process called
subduction, one plate is thrust
downward into the mantle. As
subducted plate is pushed into the
mantle, it melts. Molten rock can then
break through the surface. As a result,
a string of undersea volcanoes erupt. In
time, an island arc may form.
3. TRANSFORM BOUNDARIES

• The edges of plates slide

past each other.
• Frequent earthquakes
occur along transform
boundaries.
ACTIVITY #2
What is It, p. 157
Complete the diagram below
by filling in the blank boxes
with the corresponding
terms/phrases.
ACTIVITY #3
What I Can Do, p. 164
Supply the needed information by writing it
on the space provided.
B. In your area, what natural scenery do you
think is a result of colliding plates?

C. How will you justify that plate tectonics or
movement of plate bondaries is also beneficial
to us?______________________________
POST TEST 2.8:

I. Multiple Choice
1. There are three distinct types of plate
bondaries, which of those types creates zone
of tension by moving the plates apart?
A. Convergent Boundary
B. Transform Fault
C. Divergent Boundary
D. None of these
2. Which of the following
resulted to the formation of new
oceanic lithosphere?
A. Convergent Boundary
B. Divergent Boundary
C. Transform Boundary
D. None of these
3. Which type of plate boundary
does the shallow focu earthquake
occur wherein it appears to be
associated with mid ocean ridges
and mountain ridges?
A. Convergent
B. Divergent
C. Transform
D. All of these
4. Convergent plate boundary creates
land formations which later become
scenery. Which of the following is one of
the BEST examples of the land
formations due to convergent plate
boundary?
A. Arc
B. Boundary
C. Valley
D. Volcanic Arc
5. Which of the following is associated
with discovery of seafloor spreading?
A. Mountains and Volcanoes are denser
than mantle
B. Rotational pole of the Earth has migrated
or moved.
C. The crust of the continents is denser than
the crust of the ocean
D. The crust of the oceans is very young
relative to the age of the crust of the
continents.

ASSIGNMENT: PERFORMANCE TASK

Conduct a short interview with one or two of

your family members. Ask them about how
they think the mountain, valley, ridges, and
volcanoes are formed. List all their
responses. Afterwards, inform them on how
those formations formed based on what you
have learned from the lesson.
