Intersection and

Union of Events
Objective :
at the end of this period, students should be
able to:

► illustrate events, and union

and intersection of events
Let’s recall!
►Study the given Venn Diagram and answer the following
questions:

a.A= {___________} A B
b.B= {___________}
c.A∪B= {___________}
d.A∩B= {___________}
The Venn diagram below shows the probabilities of
grade 10 students joining either soccer (S) or
basketball (B).

B S Use the Venn diagram to find

the probabilities.
a.P(B)
0. 0.3 0. b.P(S)
2 c.P(B∩S)
4 d.P(B∪S)
0.1 e.P(B’∩S’)
BS

0.1 a. P(B)=?
Answer: P(B) =0.4+0.3=0.7
B S

0. 0. 0.
4 3 2
0.1 b. P(S)=?
Answer: P(S) =0.3+0.2=0.5
B S

0. 0. 0.
4 3 2
0.1
c. P(B∩S)=?

Answer: P(B∩S) = 0.3

B S
0.4 0.3 0.2

0.1
d. P(B∪S)=?

Answer: P(B∪S) = 0.4+0.3+0.2=0.9

BS

0. 0. 0.
4 3 2
0.1 e. P(B’∩S’)=?

Answer: P(B’∩S’) =1-P(B∪S)=0.1

Complement of an Event
►The complement of an event is the set of all outcomes that
are NOT in the event.
►This means that if the probability of an event, A, is P(A),
then the probability that the event would not occur is 1 –
P(A),denoted by P(A’).
►Thus P(A’)=1-P(A)
Activity : Intersection and Union of Events
►The extracurricular activities in which the senior class at Birbira High
School participate are shown in the Venn diagram below.

Answer the following questions:
1. How many students are in the
senior class?
Glee Club Ban
45 40 2. How many students participate in
60
d athletics?
15 3. If a student is randomly chosen,
7 11 what is the probability that the
97 student participates in athletics or
Athletic glee club?
s 78 4. If a student is randomly chosen,
what is the probability that the
Extra-curricular activities
participated by senior students student participates only in glee
club and band?
Reflect:
►A. How were you able to find the total number of students
in the senior class?
►B. How does the concept of set help you in finding the
intersection and union of two or more events?
►C. What are some notations that are used in your study of
sets in grade 7 that you can still recall? Do you think these
are needed in the study of probability of compound events?
