CITY PROFILE

• Brahmapur (also known as Berhampur) is a city on


the eastern coastline of Ganjam district of the
Indian state of Odisha.
• It is about 169 kilometers south of the state capital
Bhubaneshwar and 255 kilometers north of
Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the
oldest and largest cities of Odisha.
• Berhampur is also named “The Silk City”, as it is
famous for its silk saris, temples and unique
culture.
• It is mainly a trading center for Southern Odisha
having its influence over eight districts. The city was
declared as a Class-I Town Category as
per 2001 Census.
• The name of the city have been derived from the
name of Lord Brahmeswara worshipped in a temple
which is 4km from the town.

CONNECTIVITY

• ROAD: Brahmapur city is connected with National Highways NH-16


(Chennai–Kolkata), NH-59 (Brahmapur-Khariar), NH-516 (Narendrapur-
Gopalpur), State Highway 17 (Odisha) and State Highway 22 (Odisha)
which connect almost all other cities and towns of Odisha.
 The state government has constructed a new bus station at Haladiapadar,
at the outskirts of the city.
 The Ganjam Urban Transport Services Limited (GUTSL) with joint BERHAMPUR RAILWAY

partnership with Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) have
an agreement to run a city-bus service for Brahmapur to urban centers on
its periphery (Chatrapur, Gopalpur and Hinjili, Taratarini, Bhairabi) since 27
February 2014.
• TRAIN: Brahmapur Railway Station is a major railway station of Odisha
and India. It was first opened in 1896. It is connected with two major
stations (Howrah-Chennai) through Howrah- Chennai main route.
• SEA: The Gopalpur port was recommissioned after renovation and
expansion. It is a private port and handles mineral exports and imports. No

PHYSICAL SETTING

• River Rushikulya also known as the “Ganga” of Ganjam flows at a distance of about 30 km from the city
and discharges into the Bay of Bengal near Gopalpur port. The city has a good number of large tanks/lakes
and is bounded in the west and north by a range of hillocks having granite rocks of igneous origin.
• Maximum summer temperature is 40 °C; minimum winter temperature is 22 °C. The mean daily
temperature varies from 33 °C to 38 °C. May is the hottest month; December is the coldest. The average
annual rainfall is 1250 mm and the region receives monsoon and torrential rainfall from July to October.

REASON FOR CHOOSING THIS CITY

• The city has a strong positive attitude for its commercial, religious and human
resource development activities.
• Like other ancient urban centers, Berhampur city is expanding rapidly in a
sporadic & haphazard manner.
• Satellite townships are developing in the outskirts of the city. Nearby towns
like Chatrapur, Gopalpur, Hinjili, and Digapahandi are likely to merge in the
future to provide a regional commercial & tourism hub.

• In the recent times, the town boasts of housing some of the prominent
industrial units including IREL, STPI, Titanium Plant and proposed TATA SEZ &
R.K.Power Plant.
• It’s also renowned in the region for the educational institutions imparting
services in the field of medical, engineering and IT sectors.
• The arts and craft units and small scale industries, as well, have an important
role in the cities evolution as an emerging tier-3 city in the east coast region.
