GUIMOD SUR, SAN JUAN, ILOCOS SUR USING BITTER GOURD (Momordica
Charantia)

PROPONENT:

LENNON JOHN FARINAS

REGGIE CASTILLO
BUDGETARY REQUIREMENTS: Php 2,100.00

SOURCE OF FUND: SELF-FUND

PERIOD OF IMPLEMENTATION: JANUARY 2023 – APRIL 2023

PLACE OF IMPLEMENTATION: GUIMOD SUR, SAN JUAN, ILOCOS SUR

I. RATIONALE

Bitter gourd is a green-

skinned vegetable with white to
translucent flesh and a taste that
fits its name. Unless you grew
up with bitter gourd as part of
your regular diet, it might take
you a while to warm up to the
bitter flavor.
Bitter gourd is also a vegetable of
many names. It is equally known as
bitter melon, bitter cucumber, balsam-
pear, bitter apple, or bitter squash.
Here in our country, we called it
Ampalaya and we as an Ilocano we
called it Parya. It is Originally
of African and Asian origin, bitter
gourd is now grown widely across
India, Indonesia, Myanmar, here in the
Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan, and
Sri Lanka. East-West Seed has
transformed a tentative semi-
commercial crop into a major
commercial crop in the tropical
regions.
Momordica charantia likely originated in
eastern India or southern China. It favors hot
and humid climates with plenty of sunshine
and regular water access. Today, you can find
bitter gourd growing in fields across Asia,
though it has also become popular in the
Caribbean and South America.

There are several varieties of bitter gourd, but the

two most common are Chinese bitter gourd and
Indian bitter gourd. The Chinese variety more
closely resembles a pale green cucumber with
crimped, bumpy skin. The Indian variety has
narrow, tapered ends and sharp, angled ridges all
over its surface. The differences between these
varieties are mostly visual, and both offer similar
flavor and health benefits.
SIGNIFICANCE OF The significant is to restore and
THE PROJECT endorse that ampalaya or bitter
gourd is one good source of
nutrients. In fact, of all members of
the cucurbit family, ampalaya has
the highest source of vitamin C
content. It also has a higher protein
content than tomatoes and
cucumbers. In addition, Ampalaya
also contains zinc, iron, phosphorus,
magnesium and calcium.
Perhaps, its ability to lower blood
sugar levels is one of the most well-
known benefits of ampalaya,
especially for those Filipinos with
diabetes.
PATICIPANTS AND OTHER
STAKEHOLDER

Maybe you are asking if who

are the participants and
stakeholder in this project?
Participants and Stakeholder in
this projects are the people in
our Barangay where the project
is. It should be a Children, a
Teenager, Senior Citizens,
Barangay Officials or just a
Simple person who are
interested in our project.
WHAT WOULD BE THE RESULT OF THIS
PROJECT?
Ampalaya is famous in the Philippines for
its edible fruit, which is considered a staple in
many types of Asian Cuisine. So I think this
project have a good Results not only in our
own sake but also the people in our Barangay
and for those person whose interested in our
project. Because according to the social
weather station, two in the five Filipinos lack
access to a healthy diet and consider
themselves food-poor. So this urban gardening
is a solution to decrease these numbers, and
puts power over healthy food decisions back
into the hands of consumers.
2. It is also a way to decrease the number of person
who have a High Sugar Level.
II. OBJECTIVES
The general purpose of this project are:

1. To introduce that Urban gardening can increase

access to healthy, affordable, fresh produce and provides
communities with opportunities to learn about nutrition
and growing food.

3. Another objectives is to have an extra money

income to help our parents in this small way we think.
