Community- Based Project Management and Immersion

Community Based-Management
• Community-based management (CBM) is a
bottom up approach of organization which can be
facilitated by an upper government or NGO
structure but it aims for local stakeholder
participation in the planning, research,
development, management and policy making for a
community as a whole.

VOLUNTEERISM
Advantages of volunteerism
•  It is the volunteering work that often holds a community
together. It helps a volunteer to connect with a community
and help it in becoming a better place. Remember even a
small effort on your part goes a long way in making a viable
difference in the life of someone
• Dedicating your services for community work helps in
making new friends, strengthen existing relations, improve
social skills, and expand your network.
• Committing a shared activity is one of the best ways to
connect with people of common interests
• Volunteering activities provide ample opportunities to
develop as well as practice social skills and make more
contacts and friends

VOLUNTEERISM
What Motivates you to Volunteer
• Values – Choose an organization that shares
your values.
• Understanding – Find an organization that can
use your skills or teach you what skills you want
to learn.
• Social – Find people you want to be around.  Do
not choose an organization or perform an activity
because of peer pressure.
• Career – For those of you that are “work
inexperienced,” consider picking an organization
that can land you a job or enhance your career.

VOLUNTEERISM
What Motivates you to Volunteer
• Protective  - Turn the protective motivator into
learning, healing, and giving because it makes you
feel good.
• Enhancement – Clary et al. attribute this
motivator to a need to “obtain satisfactions
related to personal growth and self-esteem.” Let
us call this “purpose.” We all want to have
purpose, we need to be able to define ourselves in
a positive manner, and feel like we are helping
someone, somewhere, including ourselves.

VOLUNTEERISM
Why Volunteerism is important for our
youth
In the words of Opportunity Nation, “There is
mounting evidence that volunteering, participating in
service projects, and other forms of community
involvement are more than feel-good activities. They
can contribute to better outcomes for youth and for
communities.”
• Develop Transferable Skills - Youth who volunteer
regularly practice skills—like collaboration and
problem solving—that are vital to succeed in
academics, the workplace, and their personal lives.

VOLUNTEERISM
Why Volunteerism is important for
our youth
• Reinforce Social Capital - Teens who volunteer build
relationships and strengthen their support network, or
“social capital.” Social capital strengthens trust and
sense of community and is critical to upward mobility.
• Make Real Change - Volunteering gives youth the
opportunity to work through real challenges and make
meaningful change. These transformative experiences
encourage teenagers and children to confront moral
dilemmas, investigate solutions, and employ
innovative thinking.

VOLUNTEERISM
Why Volunteerism is important for our
youth
• Facilitate Respect - Exposure to meaningful volunteer
opportunities as children and adolescents will help foster
lasting empathy and inclusivity, qualities necessary in
cultivating safe, unified communities.
• Support Academic Succes - Nonprofits and volunteer
centers have begun to partner with local campuses to
develop service-learning and other volunteer programs.
• Build Safer Communities - Teens who volunteer are
50% less likely to participate in risky behaviors, are less
likely to become pregnant and use drugs, and are more
likely to experience psychological well-being.

VOLUNTEERISM
Why Volunteerism is important for our youth
• Spread the Good - With their vast social networks and
technological savviness, youth make for great volunteer
recruiters! Encourage teenagers and young helpers to
invite their friends, and you’ll be amazed at what they can
accomplish together.
• Introduce Fresh Perspectives - By welcoming youth
volunteerism, your organization invites energetic
perspectives and new ideas.
• Foster Lifelong Engagement - You’ll not only increase your
volunteer pool in the short-term, but you may also build
lifelong relationships. That’s because those who volunteer
when they’re young are more likely to become
philanthropic adults invested in their communities.

VOLUNTEERISM
IT’S IMPORTANCE AND BENEFITS
Volunteering is important as it offers essential help to
worthwhile causes, people in need, and the
wider community. Indeed, many organziations and
charities rely on the generosity of volunteers as often
they’re only part-funded through government or local
councils, and cannot afford to pay salaries for all their
staff. In fact, many companies depend almost solely
upon teams of volunteers to help them thrive and do
their work.

VOLUNTEERISM
BENEFITS
•Volunteering connects you with others - If you’re feeling lonely,
isolated, or simply want to widen your social circle, volunteering in your
local community is an important – and often fun – way to meet new
people.
•Volunteering builds self-confidence and self-esteem - Doing good
for others and the community helps to create a natural sense of
accomplishment. And working as a volunteer can also give you a sense
of pride and identity, helping to boost your self-confidence further by
taking you out of your natural comfort zone and environment.
•Volunteering is important for physical health - Interestingly,
volunteering has distinct health benefits that can boost your mental
and – perhaps more surprisingly – physical health. Indeed, a growing
body of evidence suggests that people who give their time to others
might benefit from lower blood pressure and a longer lifespan .

VOLUNTEERISM
BENEFITS
•and mental health  - When it comes to volunteering being important
for mental health, the benefits are clear. It can help counteract the
effects of stress, depression and anxiety. Indeed, the social contact
aspect of helping others can have a profound effect on your overall
psychological well-being.
•Volunteering is important for a sense of purpose  - Volunteering
like this helps address a social problem that is meaningful to you and in
turn helps to build a sense of purpose, which furthermore boosts your
own happiness.
•Volunteering helps you forget your own problems - One other
benefit of volunteering is that focusing on others can give us a deeper
sense of perspective and help distract us from negative thoughts and
help stop rumination.

VOLUNTEERISM
BENEFITS
• Volunteering is important for your career - In an increasingly
competitive job market, volunteering experience can be incredibly useful. It
shows potential employers that you can take initiative and that you’re
willing to give your own time to improve the world for other people.

It's clear the benefits of volunteering are huge – improved physical and
mental health, new friends and avoiding loneliness, a sense of purpose and
deeper self-confidence. In turn, all of these things will help to boost your
overall happiness: a win-win situation for all involved .
