ROLE OF COAL IN

THE DEVELOPMENT
OF TRANSPORT
What is the mining coal?
Coal can be extracted from
the earth either by surface
mining or underground
mining. Once coal has been
extracted, it can be used
directly (for heating and
industrial processes) or to fuel
power plants for electricity.

2
• Coal is the most important and abundant
fossil fuel in India. It accounts for 55% of the
country's energy need. The country's

. THE PURPOSE OF TRANSPORTATION
IS TO OFFER OR ENHANCE ACCESS TO
VARIOUS DESTINATIONS FOR
PERSONS AND ENTERPRISES. AS A
RESULT, TRANSPORTATION ALLOWS
FOR A BROADER VARIETY OF
ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL
RELATIONSHIPS THAT WOULD NOT
OTHERWISE BE AVAILABLE.
TRANSPORT IS A SIGNIFICANT
ECONOMIC SECTOR BY ITSELF.

4
Transport is critical to the smooth
operation of commercial
transactions, as well as to
guaranteeing social well-being and
demographic cohesiveness.
Transportation facilitates people's
daily movement and is critical to
the manufacturing and distribution
of products. Adequate
infrastructure is a crucial
requirement for transportation
networks.

5
WHAT ARE THE THREE MAIN USES OF COAL?

COAL IS A MAJOR SOURCE OF ENERGY IN THE PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICAL

POWER USING STEAM GENERATION. IN ADDITION, GASIFICATION AND

LIQUEFACTION OF COAL PRODUCE GASEOUS AND LIQUID FUELS THAT CAN BE

EASILY TRANSPORTED (E.G., BY PIPELINE) AND CONVENIENTLY STORED IN TANKS.

6
WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF COAL IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES?

COAL IS THE BACKBONE OF MODERN ELECTRICITY. COAL CURRENTLY SUPPLIES AROUND 30% OF

PRIMARY ENERGY AND 41% OF GLOBAL ELECTRICITY GENERATION. COAL USE IS FORECAST TO RISE

OVER 50% TO 2030, WITH DEVELOPING COUNTRIES RESPONSIBLE FOR 97% OF THIS INCREASE,

PRIMARILY TO MEET IMPROVED ELECTRIFICATION RATES.
