COMPUTER CHIPS

GROUP 2
What is a computer chip?
A computer chip is an integrated circuit or monolithic integrated
circuit that is a set of electronic circuits on one small flat piece of
semiconductor material, usually silicon.
What minerals and metals are used to build
computer chips?
The mineral that is used to build computer chips is silicon waters or
platforms who serves as the foundation of microchips are composed of
silicon, While the metal wires used to connect the sections of circuitry
are usually made of either aluminum or copper.
What makes silicon useful to computer chips?
Most electron components of computer chips are semiconductor
devices like transistors and diodes. Silicon(Si) is the most widely used
material in semiconductor devices. Its combination of low raw
material cost, relatively simple processing and a useful temperature
range making it currently the best compromise among the various
competing materials.
What makes copper useful to computer chips?
Because of copper’s superior electrical conductivity, this technology
enables conductor channel lengths and widths to be significantly
reduced, Which is why you’ll mostly see copper in computer chips
nowadays.
How is silicon formed?
Pure silicon is produced by heating silicon dioxide with carbon at
temperatures approaching 2200 degree celcius. It is found in rocks,
sand, clays and soils, combined with either oxygen as silicon dioxide
or with oxygen and other elements as silicates. For use in electronic
devices, single crystals are grown by slowly withdrawing seed crystals
from molten silicon
How are computer wastes a threat to the Earth’s
atmosphere?
One of the largest environmental effects of e-waste is the release of harmful
compounds into the atmosphere when it is subjected to heat. Following that,
such hazardous substances may seep into the groundwater, endangering
both land and marine life. Air pollution can also be a result of electronic
trash. When there is precipitation, the e-waste that is deposited into the
landfill will leach. Heavy metals and other harmful compounds found in the
leachate have the potential to pollute the land and water supplies. In
addition to contaminating soil, the pollutants may also harm groundwater if
they reach there.
