Tiny homes

for homeless
By: Nick Zammuto
What is the organization?
● Student-run at UofSC advocating for the homeless population
○ different than other orgs because we would partner with the city to
make tiny homes for homeless individuals, families, and population
● Provide services for affected populations with a social worker: Daprile, Lucas. “Tired
of Competing for ‘USC,’
○ Find long-term housing & employment South Carolina Pushes
○ Safety and privacy a New Abbreviation.”
The State, 10 Jan.
○ Health services

○ Substance abuse & Detox www.thestate.com/new

Educating the Public
● Statistics about our area:
○ 22.5% of Columbia residents had income below the poverty level in 2019,was
38.5% greater than the poverty level of 13.8% across the entire state of South
Carolina” cd
○ Renting rate of people below poverty level: 83.3% cd
○ “1,600 homeless students in our county from 2014-2015” ( About Landing Page)
○ “69,000 families live below the poverty line in our county homeless no more”
(About Landing Page)
○ “82% of homeless families who receive assistance, only need it once homeless
no more” (About Landing Page)
● Helping individuals just once via services with the city and tiny
homes can help them get out of homelessness and poverty

Educating continued...
● Substance abuse and mental health is a large factor
○ “(NASADAD) estimated that in 2005, over 19.3 million people needed, but did not receive, addiction
treatment services” (Substance Abuse and Homelessness)
○ “38% of homeless people were dependent on alcohol and 26% abused other drugs” ( Substance Abuse
and Homelessness)
● those who have substance abuse and mental health issues = major part of population
● like transitional housing would have rules:
○ passing drug tests
○ working with their social worker
○ attending meetings for health, their housing, and check-ups
● For those, are not able to meet these, the city social workers would take over care for the
individual not in the tiny home community
Conclusions & Discussion
● This organization can greatly impact our
community through effective actions of
building tiny homes, but in reality it can not
help everyone.

● Hopefully it can bring together the homeless

population and social workers in a safe and
secure environment that can promote growth
and future sustainability for this population
