NEWTON´S LAWS

OF MOTION
(OR MECHANICS)

TO PI C 8
FIRST, LET´S REMEMBER….
MECHANICS (DIVIDED IN 2 MAIN FIELDS):

Studies the motion of

movement.
Mechanics

resting state (is also
called equilibrium)
IF WE WANT TO UNDERSTAND MECHANICS…
¿WHAT IS FORCE?
• A force is a push or pull upon an object resulting from the object´s interaction with another
object.
• It has a direction and dimension, so it is a vector quantity, that measures the intensity of the
interaction between 2 or more objects.

For example, the normal force

Is the force in which an object
Contact force comes in contact with another.
due to direct contact between
an object with a surface.

Force
Are produced by the interaction Weight, for example, is a case
of a physical object with a of a force due to the distance of
No-contact vector field, like the interaction between the mass of
forces gravitational field, the electric an object and the gravitational
field or the magnetic field. field produced by the earth.
IF WE WANT TO UNDERSTAND MECHANICS…
¿WHAT IS MASS?

• Mass can be defined as the amount of matter that possess a body or as the physical scalar
quantity that measures the resistance of an object for either acquiring motion.
UNITS

Variable SI units USCU units

Force (F) Newton (N) Pound force (LBF)
Weight (w) Newton (N) Pound force (LBF)
Mass (M) Kilogram (Kg) Slug (Slug)
Acceleration (a) m/s2 ft/s2
NEWTON´S FIRST LAW OF MOTION
NEWTON´S FIRST LAW OF MOTION
• Every object will continue to do what it is doing, if
it at rest, it will remain at rest & if it is at motion it
will stay in motion, at least an unbalance force
makes a change.
• Balanced forces are equal in size and opposite in direction.
When forces are balanced, there is no change in motion.
• To have unbalanced forces means that the force applied in one
direction is greater than the force applied in the opposite
direction. When unbalanced forces are acting on an object, there
is a change in speed and/or direction.
NEWTON´S FIRST LAW OF MOTION
NEWTON´S SECOND LAW OF MOTION
• What happens when there is an unbalanced force acting on an object?

In which case will there be more acceleration?

NEWTON´S SECOND LAW OF MOTION
• In which scenario will there be more acceleration? (while pulling the books)
NEWTON´S SECOND LAW OF MOTION
• In which scenario will there be more acceleration? (while pulling the books)
NEWTON´S SECOND LAW OF MOTIN
• Acceleration is directly proportional to the net (unbalanced) force applied, and inversely
proportional to the mas of the object:
a= Fnet/m
Fnet= m*a
a: acceleration
F: net force (total force, adition of forces)
m: mass

Weight=m*a=m*g
WEIGHT
• Will the weight be different?
THIRD LAW OF NEWTON
“Every action has an equal and opposite reaction”
• What happens when 2 objects interact with each other?

The reaction and action forces have equal magnitude and

opposite directions (balanced forces).
The ball is applying a force to the table (weight) at the same
time table is exerting a force on the ball (normal force).

The frog is pushing the water back and

Do the Newton´s laws apply here?
the water is pushing the frog (creating a
constant movement).
THIS WEEK´S ASSIGNMENT:
Make a video explaining the 3 laws of motion!
• It must more than 1:30 minutes long and less than 3 min.
• You must explain the laws in your own words.
• Remember to include your citations, otherwise you´ll get a DN (for plagiarism), use trusthworthy sources.
• Upload your video to youtube and post the link on canvas.
• You should use images/gifs to explain your ideas, you don´t need to appear on the video but definitely it
must be your voice explaining the laws, include background music (at a low volume so we can still hear
you) and try to make a fun and easy to understand video.
• If you´re not familiar to any video edition software you can make a power point presentation (including
audio, images and transitions), save it as a video and upload it to youtube as well.
Rubric:
20%: Between 1:30 and 3 minutes long
40%: You explain fluently and eloquently the laws of motion and use trustworthy
sources, as well as every day original examples, it is easy to understand to any audience.
20%: The video has good quality, the audio is understandable.
20%: The video is dynamic, it includes images that help explain your point, is pretty.
