BEFORE 1850
FIRST NEWSPAPERS OF SUBCONTINENT
IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES:
• First English newspaper of subcontinent is hickey’s gazette by James augutus hickey
(Calcutta , 1780)
• First Bengali newspaper of subcontinent is samachar darpan by Baptist missionary society
(serampore, 1818).
• First urdu newspaper of subcontinent is jam-e-jahan numa by Harihar dutta (Calcutta, 27
march,1822)
• First Persian newspaper of subcontinent is Mirat-ul-akhbar by Raja rammohun roy (Calcutta,
12 april,1822/ friday).

IN SERAPORE , BENGAL.
JAM-E-JAHAN NUMA
• First newspaper of subcontinent in urdu language.
• Founded by Harihardutta in Calcutta (27
march,1822).
• Its first editor was munshi sada singh lal.
• Weekly newspaper (published on every
wednesday). With monthly 2 rupee subscription.
• After 2 months it language was changed from urdu
to persian.
• After sometimes, an additional independent
appendix ( 4 pages) was began to publish with it
(for almost 5 years).
• Its major contribution for society was to end the
tradition of sati.
DEHLI URDU AKHBAR
 It was founded as well as edited by molvi muhhammad baqir in 1837. it
survived for 21 years.
 It is the first daily urdu newpaper. Click icon to add picture
 Firstly its name was dehli akhbar then in 1840 it became dehli urdu akhbar.
 prior to 1857, the delhi urdu akhbar was rather not seen as anti british
it was during 1857 that the tone of delhi urdu akhbar dramatically changed as
it became opposed to british role in india
 It was supposed to support rebillions.
 It worked on social issues, bringing awakeness about politics in public,
provoking a sense of rebillism in people.
 The poem shown is written by muhammad hussain azad ,the son of molvi
baqir, published on 24 may, 1857 which was in support of bahadur shah zafar
and against british.
 Another newspapers form dehli was syed-ul-akhbar published by the brother
of sir syed ahmed khan in 1837 and kareem-ul-akhbar in 1845, which
continued for 3 years.
Urdu journalism from 1850
to 1857
KOH-E-NOOR
 It was the first newspaper published from Lahore in 1850.
 Founded by munshi har sukh raey.
 This paper had the largest daily circulation among all the
urdu newspaper at that time. It was started under
supervision of east india company. It continued for almost
more than a half century.
 other newspapers were:
 Darya-e-noor by fakir siraj u din (independent newspaper) .
It couldnot survived for much time because it openly
condemned british rule.
NEWSPAPERS FROM OTHER CITIES:

From multan:
The very first newspaper from multan was Ryaz-e-noor by munshi Muhammad Mehdi Hassan in
1852.
From sialkot:
munshi dewan chand started newspaper for the first time in sialkot.he relaesed6 newspapers before
the war of 1857, among which chashma-e-faiz was very famous.
From Gujranwala:
The first newspaper from Gujranwala was gulzar-e-Punjab.
SADIQ-UL-AKHBAR
It was actually the name of three newspapers that were published form dehli in 1853,1854 and 1856.
It was edited by jamil-u-din.
sadiq al-Akhbār is another prominent newspaper which took active part in motivating the people to revolt
against English rule.

TAlism-e-lukhnow
Talism-e- Lukhnaw started in 1856 by Maulvi Yaqub Ansari as an Urdu weekly from Lukhnow almost after
five months of forcible annexation of the state of Oudh.
The contents of the paper were filled with the anti-Briton sentiments.
Although its life was only eleven months but due to its bold content and courageous criticism of the British
rulers

THE WAR OF 1857
AUDH AKHBAR
it was published by munshi nawl kishor from lucknowin 1858
It was aweekly newspaper
Initially it consisited of 4 pages then gradually the no. of pages increased to 48.
From 1871, it began to publish twice a week .
The famous personalities that were related to this newspaper were;
• Mirza ghalib
• Molana jalib dehlwi
• abdul-ul-haleem shrer
• Pandit ratan nath
In 1874 it became a daily newspaper.
AUDH AKHBAR
 it was published by munshi nawl kishor from lucknowin 1858

 It was aweekly newspaper

 Initially it consisited of 4 pages then gradually the no. of pages increased to 48.

 From 1871, it began to publish twice a week .

 The famous personalities that were related to this newspaper were;
