The Aerospace in Class project is funded by the Airbus Foundation which is committed to bringing together the
products and people of the global aerospace company Airbus to help address the challenges of today's society. The
Airbus Foundation Discovery Space is a digital portal for aerospace exploration, connecting students, parents and
educators across the globe with professionals in the field, bringing today’s research and technology to life.
Aim:
To understand how rockets use aerodynamics to fly safely

Success Criteria:
• I can identifying the key features of a rocket
• I can explain what is meant by aerodynamics
• I can explain what is meant by propulsion
• I can explain what forces are affecting a rocket
during flight.
Look at your KWL charts on front of you entitled
“How Rocket Fly”
Fill in what you know, what you want to know. We will fill in what we learned later.

Balloon Challenge

Take the balloon in front of you and stretch it a little.

Next blow up your balloon as much as you can, but
don’t tie it, just keep you fingers firmly squeezed
across the opening.
On my say, we will release the air from our balloons!
What happened? Was this what we seen in the video?
What does the word
“Aerodynamic” mean?

You will have 1 minute to “Think, Pair, Share” with

your partner on you understanding of the word
Aerodynamic.
Where have you seen aerodynamics in the real world?
Why is this important for a rocket?

Designing Your Rocket

What things will have an impact on the rocket

taking off?
What do we need to think of to make our rocket
aerodynamic?
What else does a rocket have to help it fly?
Why does it need these?

Designing Your Rocket

On your page you are going to design a

rocket.
Make sure you have a aerodynamic nose
cone!
Include stability fins in your design.
Label each part of your rocket.
Review of Our Rockets

We will now give two stars and a wish on your

partners assessment sheet.
See if they have
1. Designed a rocket to fly to the moon
2. Included an aerodynamic nose cone
3. Have stability fins attached to the rocket
4. Labelled their work
