The Industrial Internet of things

Smart Manufacture
The manufacturing industry undergoes a new age
with major changes taking place on several fronts.
Companies devoted to digital transformation take
their future plants inspired by the Internet Of
Things  (IoT). The IoT is a worldwide network of
interrelated physical devices, which is an essential
component of the internet, including sensors,
actuators, smart apps, computers, mechanical
machines, and people.
The term Smart Manufacturing was coined in 2006 at
a National Science Foundation workshop on
Cyberinfrastructure . In parallel, Germany was
working on a similar initiative completely
independently called Smart Factory, and a couple
years after that, they renamed it Industrie 4.0. Both
Smart Manufacturing and Industrie 4.0 have evolved
in parallel. Industrie 4.0 had a focus on cyber-
physical systems while Smart Manufacturing has
focused on highly connected information-driven
manufacturing.
Cost reduction — Reduce operational costs through
inventory management, optimizing assets, reducing
machine downtime, improving energy efficiency, and
optimizing operations.

Safety improvements — Ensure a safer workplace for

employees through automation and remote monitoring
and maintenance. Leverage IoT data and analytics to
address safety concerns related to strenuous
movements and monitor risks in potentially hazardous
environments.
Faster market availability — Enable shorter time-to-
market for products by improving the speed and
efficiency of manufacturing and supply chain
operations.

Improved customer satisfaction — Boost quality

through automation by reducing the risk of manual
error. By reducing the commercial distribution of
defective goods, you can improve overall product
quality and customer satisfaction, leading to reduced
numbers of product returns.
Examples of Smart-Manufacturing
Technologies
Automation/Robotics automation were
created in 1948 by William Grey Walter.
Smart manufacturing’s use
of robotics is also becoming more
diverse and collaborative, as cobots
become increasingly popular due to
social-distancing mandates. But,
generally, in smart manufacturing,
robotics systems gather a lot of data
and are well-connected to the cloud
and the smart factory at large.
Cloud
Computing/manufacturing
Sean O'Sullivan filed a trademark on
“cloud computing” in 1997.
Cloud computing has enabled
key manufacturing production
systems, including 3D printing
and generative design, as well
as product planning and
development processes.
CNC Machining
Advanced computer numerical
control (CNC) machines perform
precise multi-axis milling, lathing,
cutting, drilling, and other operations
from the designs and models of
computer-aided manufacturing
(CAM) software. Often in smart
manufacturing, CNC machines have
wireless sensors as part of the IoT.
Design for Manufacturing

Design for Manufacturing  is the

process of designing parts,
components or products for ease of
manufacturing with an end goal of
making a better product at a lower
cost. DFM involves efficiently
designing or engineering an object,
generally during the product design
stage. This allows a manufacturer to
identify and prevent mistakes or
discrepancies.
IoT/Edge Computing The origin of edge
computing can be traced back to the 1990s,
when Akamai launched its content delivery
network
Smart-manufacturing devices, machines,
robots, and so on are typically part of the
IoT, meaning they include wireless
network-connected sensors that upload data
for analysis. With the plummeting cost of
sensors, low-cost processors are also
increasingly part of IoT devices, which
means performing computing tasks locally
before uploading to the cloud.
What’s the Impact of Smart
Manufacturing?

Smart manufacturing can help a business

become much more efficient with its resources,
enhance worker safety, and facilitate worker
training.
