RESEARCH DESIGN

Unit 2

Dr. Zamarrud Ansari

What are Research Methods?

 Research methods are different from research methodologies

because they are the ways in which you will collect the data
for your research project.  The best method for your project
largely depends on your topic, the type of data you will
need, and the people or items from which you will be
collecting data.
 The following boxes below contain a list of quantitative,
qualitative, and mixed research methods.

RESEARCH DESIGN

 Research design refers to the framework of

market research methods and techniques
that are chosen by a researcher.
 The design that is chosen by the researchers
allow them to utilise the methods that are
suitable for the study and to set up their
studies successfully in the future as well.
 The design of a research can be either
qualitative, quantitative, or mixed.
Factors affecting Research
Design
1. Nature of Research Question
2. Research Setting
3. Resource & Time constraints
4. Social & Cultural factors
5. Availability of Funds
6. Availability of Data – Primary & secondary

Techniques
1. Descriptive Research
 The methods that describe the characteristics of the
variables.
 Eg a company doing good sales. (Sales is my variable).
(What the company is doing? Characteristic)
 DESCRIBING A PHENOMENON/SITUATION
 Primary focus – (trying to describe the nature of the
demographics.)
 AKA Observation Research
 AKA Diagnostic Research
2. Exploratory Research Design
 To find out – explore
 Use of ideas, thoughts on a particular topic,
 New things – unexplored areas
 What is happening + Why + How (FOCUS ON ALL #3)
CAUSAL Research

 WHY? Reasons for a phenomenon to happen

 To establish “Cause & Effect Relationship”
