Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students

Discussion

Social work aims to improve human and


social conditions and alleviate human distress
and social problems. It enhances people's
competence and functioning, ability to access
social support and resources, and expansion of
the structures of the society that provide
opportunities for all citizens
(DuBois &
Miley 2008).
There are 3 goals of social work namely;

1. The Goal on Caring


- the heart of social work that centers on
the well being or the welfare and comfort
of the individual and community.

2.The Goal on Curing


-the aspect of treating people with problems
in their social environment.
3. The Goal on Changing
-refers to the active participation of
the social workers in social reforms.
The Scope of Social Work are:

1. Child Development Social Work

- their job is to protect vulnerable youth and


help disadvantaged families meet the needs
of their children.
2. Medical Social Work

-They are responsible for offering the support


and resources that patients need in order to
fully recover from a medical illness or injury as
well as the resulting emotional, physical, or
psychological concerns.
3. Clinical Social Work

-is a specialty practice area of social work


which focuses on the assessment, diagnosis,
treatment, and prevention of mental illness,
emotional, and other behavioral disturbances.
4. Social Work administration and
management.

-Social work administrators are proactive


leaders in public and private agencies that
provide services to clients.
5. International Social Work

-They include direct services in communities,


refugee camps, orphanages, hospitals, and
schools, as well as supporting the efforts of
national governments, intergovernmental
organizations, and non-governmental
organizations to enhance social well-being.
6. Social work as community organizer.

-Community organizing and advocacy work


with the power of numbers many people
thinking, working, and acting together to
counterbalance wealthy and powerful
groups and the means they have to protect
and extend themselves.
7. Women welfare

-is which aims to promote the welfare of


disadvantaged women giving special attention
to the prevention, eradication of exploitation of
women in any forms as well as promotion of
skills for employment and self-actualization.
8. Crisis Intervention

-They provide emergency support and


assistance to persons with physical or
mental disorders by addressing their
distress, impairment, and instability.
9. The Criminal Justice

-They are social workers who work in justice


and corrections can be found in courts, rape
crisis centers, police departments, and
correctional facilities.
The core values of social work are:

Service - to serve people in need and work


to address social problems.

Dignity and worth of the person - Be


respectful of every person and mindful of
cultural and ethnic diversity.
The Importance of human
relationships.

-Recognize and value the importance


of human relationships, and work to
strengthen these relationships in
order to enhance the well-being of
individuals and communities.
Integrity - is to be trustworthy and uphold
the profession's mission, values, ethical
principles and ethical standards.

Competence - Practice within areas of


competence, continuously develop
professional knowledge and expertise, and
contribute to the knowledge of the
profession.
