What is Communication?
• Communication is the process of transferring information from a sender to a receiver with the use of a
medium in which the communicated information is understood by both sides

• Communication is a process that allows organisms to exchange information by several methods.

• Communication is the use of words to describe and convey a message or give information to another

person

2
The Communication Act

• When a message is sent, person has to ENCODE their thoughts and feelings.

• Have to find words & Actions that will code their meaning.

• The person receiving the message can’t read the sender’s mind, have to DECODE
what sender sent

• NOISE may occur which may lead to wrong decoding of the message.

3
Carl R. Rogers

• The whole of task of psychotherapy is to deal with a failure in communication.

• Psychotherapist help individual to have a good communication within himself.

• Individual will be ready to have a good, free and effective communication with
others

• Good Communication between people is always therapeutic.

4
Obstacle to Communication

• People’s tendency to evaluate.

• People should learn how to listen with understanding and avoid

evaluative impulses to improve communication.

5
Why “listening” approach is not widely used?

• Lack of Courage

• Heightened emotions

• Too large a group

6
F. J.Roethlisberger
• Communication is impossible when people do not see and assume the same things or
share the same values. Two theories come appear:

1. Communication fails when B do not accept what A has to say and that the goal of
communication is to get B to agree with A

2. Communication fails when B does not feel to express his feelings to A because B fears
they will not be accepted by A

• Communication is facilitated when A & B are wiling to express and accept their differences
7
F. J Roethlisberger

• When someone can’t get the other to understand him, the more the other will
become frustrated and his ability to reason logically is diminished, yet first will
evaluate the other more and more in terms of his own values

• When you try to understand the other person instead of letting him understand
you, by encouraging him to speak and express his feelings, he will feel accepted as
a person and will be less defensive

• To have a good communication people should learn how to listen

8
Misunderstanding Messages

• If the receiver misunderstands the message, sender gets upset, which

can cause friction, tension, conflict, even anger.

• To avoid misunderstandings, the receiver of the message needs to be

skilled enough to know how to understand the sender of the message.
