Types of Communication

✔ Verbal Communication
- putting messages into codes – either written or spoken
words

✔ Non-Verbal Communication
- involves gestures, facial expressions, and use of time and
space

Parts of Non-Verbal Communication

❑ Sign language – gestures replaces words


❑ Action language – bodily movements
❑ Object language – display of material things including human
body and its clothing
Forms of Non-Verbal Communication

1. Kinesics – body language or motion language


- facial expressions, eye movements, stance or
posture

2. Paralanguage – vocal cues ccompanied by spoken


language such as pitch, rates and pauses

3. Proxemics – use of space between two people as they talk


and/or relate to each other)

4. Tactile communication or Touch


- use of touch tells a lot about us – our status, needs and
attitudes
Types of Human Distance as Non-Verbal Comm

✔ Intimate Distance – 0 to 18”

✔ Personal Distance – 18” to 4’

✔ Social Distance – 4’ to 12’

✔ Public Distance – 12’ to the limit of sight

- this involves communication with oneself
✔ day dreaming
✔ nocturnal dreaming
✔ speaking aloud (talking to oneself)

✔ making gestures while thinking
✔ eye contact

✔ Perception, interpretations of events and


experiences

Interpersonal Communication

✔ this involves direct exchange of messages between individuals who


can be designated both roles as source and receiver

Types of interpersonal communication include:

❑ Face-to-face – occurs between two or few people as long as the


communicators are able to see and interact with each other

❑ Mediated – occurs when a device such as a telephone or computer


is placed between the source and receiver

✔ this happens within and between groups, organizations and


institutions in a face-to-face or mediated situations

disseminate messages within or between the groups

□ External – communication is directed to non-members

✔ this is directed to the general public and therefore is highly


impersonal

✔ It allows large-scale dissemination of messages to audiences


who are dispersed over a wide geographical area

✔ Audience receives messages simultaneously

Five Types of Noise in Communication

1. Physical
2. Physiological
3. Psychological
4. Semantic
5. Cultural

A noise, or more than one, is always present in all


communication contexts, such as face-to-face
communication, group communication, organizational
communication, and mediated communication.

Noise can be minimized through proper communication


planning and management.
Examples of Noise in Communication

1. Physical Noise

✔ Environmental sounds such as barking dog, heavy rain


drops, thunderstorm, noisy children, extremely high or low
temperature

2. Physiological Noise

✔ Unfavorable human body functions such as headache,


deafness/blindness, talking too fast or too slow
3. Psychological Noise

✔ Psychological factors such as beliefs, attitude, perception

4. Semantic Noise

✔ Different meaning perceived because of the use of jargons


(technical terms), mispronounciation, wrong sentence
structure, or inappropriate use of words
5. Cultural noise

Wrong perception because of cultural differences in the meaning


of posture, body movements, eye contact, touch, space, dress
