Prepare and Use Visual Aids

Introduction
 What is Visual Aids (VA)?

 What kinds of visual aids are you using in your

teaching?
 Can you share some examples of VA that you have

seen poorly used?

 What kinds of VA can you use with large groups of

students?

2
Objectives
 Use a writing board

 Prepare and use a flipchart

 Use a computer to prepare and project a presentation

3
Writing Board: Use
 To document ideas during discussions or brainstorming

sessions
 To write key points of a presentation

 To note points you wish to emphasize

 To draw:

Diagrams or decision trees

Anatomy of the human body

4
Advantages
 Available in most classrooms and do

not require electricity

 Inexpensive and easy to use

 Preferred for participatory activities

5
Disadvantages
 Cannot hold a large amount of information

 No permanent record of the information

 Writing on the board is time-consuming

 Difficult to write on the board and talk to students

 Not appropriate for large class

6
Writing Board Tips #1
 Keep board clean

 Use chalk or markers that contrast with the

background of the board

 Make text and drawings large enough to be seen

at the back of the room

 Underline headings and important or unfamiliar

words for emphasis

7
Tips #2
 Do not talk while facing the board

 Do not block the students’ view of the board

 Allow sufficient time for students to copy the

information

8
Flipchart: Use
 Note objectives or outcomes before or after the

session
 Create flowcharts to work through decision -making

in different situations
 Record ideas during small group exercises,

discussions or brainstorming sessions

9
Advantages
 Relatively inexpensive, easy to move, and do not

require electricity.
 They are small enough that several may be used

simultaneously (e.g., for small group work)

 Pages of information can be prepared in advance

 Suitable for small group

10
Disadvantage
 Difficult to use for large group/ class

 Can not be reused

 Not available in adequate amount

 Small and do not hold large information

11
Flipchart Tips #1
 Make it easy to read (bullets, white space, block

letters, wide-tipped marker)

 Make the flipchart page attractive (colors,

heading, boxes, cartoons, borders)

 Have masking tape available to hang flipchart

pages on the walls

12
Tips #2
 To hide a portion of the page, fold up the lower

portion of the page and tape it; remove to reveal.

 Face the students, not the flipchart, while talking.

 When you finish with a flipchart page, tape it to

the wall.

13
Computer Presentation: Advantages #1
 You can save the files and

update the information easily

 It is faster than preparing

overhead transparencies or flip

charts

14
Advantages #2
 Most graphics software are

easy to use and creates

attractive & interesting
presentation slides

 You can prepare PPT slides and

create transparencies, a
projected presentation, and
handout easily.
15
What is the disadvantage of using computer presentation?

16
Disadvantages
 Computers can be expensive and may require

some maintenance.

 You will need electrical outlets, extension cords,

and voltage surge protectors.

 Sometimes computers “crash” or “freeze” and

information can be lost if not saved.

17
Computer Presentation Tips #1
 Make sure technical assistance is available for

problems with the computer.

 Avoid busy or confusing backgrounds.

 Minimize the transitions between slides.

 If using animation, use it consistently.

18
Tips … #2
 Remember that slides should highlight key points

 Charts and tables should be large and simple for the

message to be clear
 Always have a back up of the presentation

19
Summary

 What is Writing board?

 Which VA is best to teach for large class?
