The document discusses the history of computers from mechanical to electronic machines. It describes several early mechanical computers like the Antikythera mechanism, the abacus, Napier's bones, and Pascaline. Important figures who contributed to early computer development include Charles Babbage, who designed the difference engine, and Alan Turing who conceived of the Turing machine. The document then covers the transition to electronic computers, noting inventions like the ABC, ENIAC, and EDVAC which replaced vacuum tubes with transistors.

the past to the present 2. Name the inventors of each computer invention 3. State the five generations of computer • MECHANICAL COMPUTERS . These are the computers invented during early years with no electricity. • ELECTRONIC MACHINES These are the machines invented using electricity. MECHANICAL COMPUTERS ANTIKYTHERA • Is a mechanical calculator coming from Ancient Greece. Used to calculate astronomical positions which means, positions of stars, planets, comets, galaxies etc. ABACUS •The first computer ever made and was also known as the Counting Frame. A calculator made out of bamboo wood and stones. NAPIER’S RODS OR NAPIER’S BONES • It is made out of bones or sticks of wood. It added, multiplied, divide, took square root and cube root. Invented by John Napier. CALCULATING CLOCK • Calculating Clock was invented by German mathematician named Wilhelm Schickard in 1623. It is known as the first mechanical calculator. It was about the size of a typewriter and could add, subtract, multiply and divide. PASCALINE • The Pascaline was invented by French man named Blaise Pascal in 1642. This Calculator had 8 figures and carried 10’s, 1100’s, and 1000’s. The calculations were done using little stones to add and subtract. STEP RECKONER/S TEPPED RECKONER •Invented by famous German mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in 1671. Used to calculate/perform four basic operations. JACQUARD LOOM Invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1801. The loom was controlled by punch cards with punched holes, each row of which corresponds to one row of the design. DIFFERENCE ENGINE Difference Engine is used to compute mathematical tables. Designed by British mathematician named Charles Babbage- The father of modern computer. TABULATING MACHINE This machine was built to restore data through punch cards. It was initially used in preparing the population census of the United States. TURING MACHINE The computing machine manipulates symbols on a strip of tape according to a table of rules and it was designed by Alan Turing in 1936- 1937. ELECTRONIC MACHINES ABC (Atanasoff-Berry Computer) It was the first electronic computer which was invented at Iowa State University between 1939 and 1942. It represent several innovations in computing, including a binary system of arithmetic, parallel processing, regenerative memory, and a separation of memory and computing functions. Develop by John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer Built in 1946 by William Shockley with his associates. This led to the invention of the Transistor, which replaced the vacuum tubes in computer. EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer EDVAC was one of the earliest electronic computers. This was invented by John Maucly and J. Presper Eckert.
