What did we know about quadrilaterals: think about the square

What do we need to know about the square to draw

it?
• Four equal sides
• All the angles inside the square are right angles
• Angles inside add up to 360
• We can cut it up into triangles
• If the angle inside is 90 degrees what is the outside
angle (exterior angle)
How many sides does the stop sign have?

What do we know about the old 50p coin how

many sides those it have
Polygons
• A polygon is a shape bound by 3 or more sides

These shapes have equal sides

and equal angles: they are
regular polygons: i.e. the
square
Lesson goals
• For students to understand what regular
polygons are
• For students to be able to explain how to draw a
hexagon (type of polygon)
• For students to be able to draw a hexagon with
their set square and protractor and a pentagon
with their protractor
• For students to see how they can use polygons for
their own projects outsides of technical graphics
Polygons: Real life examples

Note today we are studying regular polygons all the angles inside
the polygon (shape) are equal and all the sides are equal like the
square
Figuring out how to draw the shape

All polygons fit into a circle, that’s why 360 is divided into the
equation
