5 YEAR CONSTRUCTION

TH

STUDIES

MR. BYRNE
LEARNING INTENTIONS

• Introduction of myself to you and you to me.

• Review some previous knowledge on foundations.
• Introduce Timber frame construction.
CLASSROOM RULES

• Follow teacher instructions at all.

• Wait patiently and quietly outside the class before class until I let you in.
• No speaking out of turn, Hands up when you want to ask a question.
• No phones during class.
• No eating during class.
• Ensure your desk and floor space is neat and tidy before leaving class.
INTRODUCTION – 2 TRUTHS 1 LIE

• Everyone write down 2 truths and 1 lie about themselves of a piece of paper.
• We will take turns in reading them out and the class will ask 3 questions about what you
said.
• We will then vote as what we think is the lie.
INTRODUCTION - WHODUNIT

• Everyone will write down one thing they’ve done and throw it anonymously into a box.
• One student will pick and read one out, at random, and they must try and explain the
story behind it. The class will vote if they think they are lying or telling the truth .
FOUNDATIONS

• Three types:
1. Strip Foundation.
2. Pile Foundation.
3. Raft Foundation.
TIMBER FRAME CONSTRUCTION

• Similar to concrete cavity wall construction

• Timber frame wall consists of timber stud framework, with insulation between each stud.
• Covered with either Plywood or Oriented Strand Board (OSB).
• A breather membrane and vapour check are fitted to the inside of the wall.
• A Service Cavity is often added on the interior.
• Plasterboard is fitted to the interior for an even finish.
RADON BARRIER

A radon barrier is a flexible, impermeable membrane that blocks radon so it cannot enter the
building
RADON GAS

• Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that results from the decay of uranium in
rocks and soils
• Odourless, Colourless, Tasteless
• Normal Range: 1.3 pCi/L
• Danger Range: 4 pCi/L
• Radon is the largest source of radiation dose to the Irish population with more than half of
your exposure due to this carcinogenic gas.
STUD FRAMEWORK
SERVICE CAVITY

What goes in a service cavity?

• Plumbing
• Gas tubes
• Electrics
• Insulation
But why not put these in the
normal cavity? Or in the insulation?
BREATHER MEMBRANE AND VAPOUR CHECK

• The combined protection provided by the vapour barrier (internally) and the breather
membrane (externally) ensures the timber inner leaf remains dry at all times.
• T
BREATHER MEMBRANE

• One way system

• Lets water vapour out but not in.
• Protects the insulation and studs
VAPOUR CHECK / AIRTIGHTNESS MEMBRANE

• Prevents any movement of water or air.

• Its on the internal wall behind the service cavity.
• What would happen if we didn’t have it?
