TYPES OF A ROOF

• The choice of what type of roof your home


will have is purely aesthetic and functional
not structural.

• Why would someone choose a different


roof style?
TERMINOLOGY

• Apron: Water proof felt strips attached between


verticals walls and the roof slope.

• Battens: Horizontal strips of wood used to attach


tiles and hold down the felt.

• Dormer: A vertical window build into the roof.


• Eaves: Where the roof meets the external wall.
• Fascia: A vertical board attached to the overhang of
the roof.

• Flashing: Lead waterproof seal that prevents ingress


of water at adjoining walls.

• Gable: The wall between the slopping roof edges.


TERMINOLOGY

• Gable: The wall between the slopping roof edges.


• Guttering: Removes water runoff.
• Hipped end: The sloped end of the roof.
• Rafter: The slopped timber used to form the roof.
• Ridge: The line formed by the meeting slopped
surfaces.

• Sarking: The waterproof felt the lines the roof,


beneath the battens.

• Soffit: A board that’s seals the fascia and the wall, air
vents are installed along the soffit.

What's the difference?
TRADITIONAL CUT ROOF

Purlin and Struts: Supports and hold the


rafters up.
Binder and Hanger: Supports and hold
the ceiling joists up.
Collar: Every 4th rafter, hold the rafters
together.
Rafter: 150x50mm, spaced 400mm
apart.
Joist: 150x50mm, Attached to rafters and
wall plate.
Birdsmouth: The shape cut to hold the
joist in place.
