Acid Rain

What countries (2) are the worst effected by ‘Acid Rain’?

• The Northeastern section of the United States

• Southeastern section of Canada

• Central Europe (Poland, Germany, Czech Republic)

• Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway and Finland)

What is the biggest cause of ‘Acid Rain’ .e.g. cars, planes
etc?

• Burning Fossil Fuels – Coal, Oil, etc

• Power Plants

• Burning Fossil Fuels produces sulfur

dioxide & nitrogen oxides

What is a natural source of the gases that cause ‘Acid
Rain’

•Volcano

•Lightning
Sulphur Dioxide

Nitrogen Dioxide
Tropical Rainforests
• They provide a habitat for over half of the
animal and plant species in the world.

• Referred to as ‘lungs of the world’.

The water cycle
How trees contribute to the
environment
• Pollution Control : Absorb large amounts of carbon

dioxide.

• Wildlife: Food and shelter for plants, birds, insects

and other animals.

• Tourism/leisure:
How trees contribute to the
environment

• Visual beauty:

• Providing Shelter:

• Land use – leaves, compost

• Reducing erosion - soil

Deforestation
Deforestation – Soil Erosion
Threats to the Rainforest
Agriculture: the forest is cleared to make land available for
crops and cattle ranches. The poor soil can’t support
agriculture for long, so more trees are cut down.
Fuel: wood is the main source of native people in the
rainforest area.
Human Population Growth: as populations grow, areas of
forest are cut down to build cities and roads.
Logging and Wood products: logging company clear large
areas of forest for commercial timber.
Agriculture
Effects of deforestation
• Soil Erosion – increases soil erosion in
deforested areas. Especially on slopes.

• Reduces the amount of oxygen in the air.

• Extinction of wildlife, animals and flowers

Effects of deforestation

• Flooding

• Rivers fill up with washed away soil, no tree roots to soak up

water or keep soil together

Air Pollution – Acid Rain

•Sulphur dioxide – nitrogen dioxide

caused by cars, factories, fires

Reducing Acid Rain
• Stop cutting down and burning of the rainforests.

• Reduce pollution from factories.

• Use smokeless fuel.

• Use more renewable resources.

• Encourage energy conservation.

Carbon Footprint

• A person’s carbon footprint is a measure of

the amount of greenhouse gases that the
individual produces or uses in their daily
lives.

• Average is 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide to the

atmosphere each year.
