The Particle Nature of Matter

Presented by: Ms. Jubileen H. Rebadeo
Learning Targets:

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to say, “I can”…

1. identify the difference between PHYSICAL and chemical
properties of matter;
2. describe how particle move in solids, liquids and gasses
and;
3. explain the properties of solids, liquids, and gasses based
on the particle nature of matter
Identify if it is a MATTER

MATTER
is anything that has mass and volume
What can you observe?
ATOM
• Smallest unit of matter.
• It is extremely small and
chemically indivisible
particles.
• This is why matter has
mass and volume.
Which one is SOLID?
Which one is LIQUID?
Which one is GAS?

WHY?
SOLID- particles of solid are packed closely together in
fixed position and cannot move.
LIQUID - the particles have spaces between them
compared to solid.
GAS - the spaces between the particles are very large.
Let’s have a short activity.

“Know me first before you own me”

Get some THINGS within your
reach (at least 3 objects)
In 5 min., you have to first identify
if it a matter, what state of matter
and describe the object the same
thing on what you did on chalk,
water and perfume. Write your
description on a ½ crosswise.
Time is up! .
Short Activity:

“Know my worth“

Writing
Washing dishes
Washing dishes
Short Activity:

Direction:
From where your are right now. Observe your surroundings, then;

1st – Give an example of a Matter

2nd – Identify any Physical properties of the matter.
3rd – Describe the given properties either an EXTENSIVE or INTENSIVE
property.

PHYSICAL EXTENSIVE or INTENSIVE

MATTER/OBJECT
PROPERTY PROPERTY

Ex. 25KG
EXTENSIVE PROPERTY
TABLE (weight/mass)

SHORT ASSESSMENT

DIRECTION:

Classify each of the properties listed in the 1 st column whether it is an EXTENSIVE or

INTENSIVE property of matter.
Any question or
clarification?
Assignment:

1. Have an advance reading about the different types of

PHYSICAL Changes.
Thank you !!!
