METAFICTION
ELEMENTS OF METAFICTION
A novel in which the book
itself seeks interaction
with the reader and sees
the book itself as a living
entity.
Although the book House of Leaves has been
labeled a horror novel, it is also regarded as a love
story. The novel is categorized as the latter by the
author himself. The book is an example of ergodic
literature, which calls for the reader to participate
actively in the writing process. The House of
Leaves synopsis details a story about a young man
who finds a manuscript about a family's
documentary, The Navidson Record, which details
their experiences with a strange house. The young
man becomes all encompassed with the text and
story, which alters the course of his own life.
story, which alters the course of his own life.

The book by Mark Z. Danielewski entitled "House of Leaves"

(2000) falls under the element of metafiction that is mentioned
above. In the case of The House of Leaves, the reader is aware of
the book within the book and the actual book that they are reading
(The House of Leaves). The employment of imagery inside the
text's real material is intended to frighten and perplex the reader,
often to the point of horror. The use of metafiction deepens the
reader's relationship to the book's character. Simply put, a
character who is also reading a book but is losing his mind is
encountered by the reader as they are reading the book. Also, the
novel is a work of fiction. The genre is described as a
psychological horror, which matches the definition of the element
(Living entity = Horror/Possessed).
