POLYNOMIALS

POLYNOMIAL
•An algebraic expression
containing one or more terms.
•Each term consists of a constant
or coefficients and variables with
positive integer exponents.
POLYNOMIAL
POLYNOMIALS AND NON-POLYNOMIALS
POLYNOMIALS NON-POLYNOMIALS
-3d3 + 8 h-8 + 5 → the exponent is negative
f5 – 10 → the denominator is a variable
4x y
3
→ it is inside a radical sign
-5x + 4y – 10 →exponent is not a whole number
56xyz

TERM

•refers to a number, a
variable or a number and
a variable combined by
multiplication or division.
TERM
1. CONSTANT TERM – contains
only a constant
2. VARIABLE TERM – contains a
variable; contains numerical
and literal coefficients
DEGREE OF A TERM
•the sum of the exponents of
the variables in the term.
Example: xy 4

The degree of the variable

term is 5.
DEGREE OF A POLYNOMIAL
•Refers to the highest degree among the
terms
Example:
1. -3x y – 18x + 12
2 6

2. 6xyz + 12x y – y z
5 2 5 3 5
DEGREE OF A POLYNOMIAL
•In identifying degree of a polynomial, you
must rewrite it in STANDARD FORM.
•Arrange the terms from the highest degree
to the lowest degree.
1. LEADING TERM – the term with the
highest degree
2. LEADING COEFFICIENT – the coefficient
of the leading term
