Lateral entry is the ability of a police officer in one
geographic location to enter employment in another area, with
the officer's salary at the new department based on experience,
job knowledge, and ability to do the job.

TYPES OF POLICE

FEDERAL
• Was and still the most prominent, collection of
federal law enforcement agencies.
• It has handled most law enforcement duties at the
federal level.
United States Department of Homeland Security
• Created in 2002 in response to the September 11,
2001 terrorist attacks.
• Became the department with the most sworn armed
Federal Law Enforcement officers and agents after it
incorporated agencies seen as having roles in
protecting the country against terrorism.

STATE
• “State troopers” or “Highway patrol”
• A police body unique to each US state, having
state-wide authority to conduct law enforcement
activities and criminal investigations.
• They perform functions outside the jurisdiction of
the county sheriff.

• In charge of duties such as patrol and
investigations.

• Sheriff’s department traditionally carry out duties

MUNICIPAL
• “Town Marshal”
• law enforcement agencies that are under the control
of local government. This includes the municipal
government, where it is the smallest administrative
subdivision.
US Marshals Service
• Is the primary agency for fugitive operations, the
protection of officers of the federal judiciary, the
management of criminal assets, the operation of
the United States Federal Witness Protection
Program and the Justice Prisoner and Allen
Transportation System, the execution of federal
arrest warrants, and the protection of senior
government officials.
Federal Bureau of Investigation
• FBI is the domestic intelligence and security service of
the United States and its principal deferral law
enforcement agency.
• J. Edgar Hoover was the first Director of the FBI
serving them from 1924 to 1972.
• FBI Police is the FBI’s uniformed security police force,
tasked with protecting key FBI facilities, properties,
personnel, users, visitors information and operations
from harm and may enforce certain laws and
administrative regulations.
Federal Protective Service
• FPS is responsible for policing, securing and
ensuring a safe environment in which federal
agencies can conduct their business.
United States Secret Service
• Aka USSS or “Secret Service” is a federal law
enforcement agency under the department of
Homeland Security charged with two distinct and
critical national security missions:
1) Conducting criminal investigations and
protecting the nation’s leaders and their families.
(2) Safeguarding the financial and critical
infrastructure of the United States.
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives
• Its responsibilities include the investigation and
prevention of federal offenses involving the
unlawful use, manufacture, and possession of
firearms and explosives; acts of arson and
bombings; and illegal trafficking and tax evasion
of alcohol and tobacco products.
Drug Enforcement Administration
• DEA is a United States federal law enforcement
agency under the United States Department of
Justice, tasked with combating drug trafficking
and distribution within the United States.
United States Park Police
• It functions a s a full-service law enforcement
agency with responsibilities and jurisdiction in those
National Park Service areas in the US and certain
other government lands.
Central Intelligence Agency
• CIA is a civilian foreign intelligence service of the
federal government of the United States, tasked with
gathering, processing, and analysing national
security information from around the world.
New York Police Department
• The primary law enforcement and investigation
agency within the City of New York.
• Motto: “Faithful unto Death”
• Largest police department in the world.

• US citizen
• At least 21 years of age
• Has at least 20/20 vision uncorrected
• Able to distinguish colors
• Physically and mentally healthy
• Applicants who have served in the military must have been
honorably discharged.
• May not have been convicted of driving while intoxicated and
must hold a valid license for at least three years prior to
application.
• Applicants should have no criminal conviction, although some
misdemeanor crimes may bar applicants from a law
enforcement position.
• All applicants are expected to be free from drug abuse, be of
good moral character, and have personal integrity.
• No applicant should have any history of criminal or improper
conduct, have a poor employment record, or have an
irresponsible financial history.
• Generally, applicants should at least have a GED equivalency
or a high school diploma, however, some departments, such as
that in Dallas, Texas, are requiring 60 or more hours of
completed college coursework.
