God's Promise to Joseph

Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the
lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph
brought a bad report of them to his father.
3 
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old
age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors. 4 But when his brothers saw that their
father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak
peaceably to him. 5 Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they
hated him even more. 6 So he said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have
dreamed: 7 There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose
and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to
my sheaf.”

And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed
have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his

So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped
Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him. 24 Then they took him and
cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it.
25 
And they sat down to eat a meal. Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was
a company of Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, balm,
and myrrh, on their way to carry them down to Egypt. 26 So Judah said to his brothers,
“What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27 Come and let us sell
him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother and our
flesh.” And his brothers listened. 28 Then Midianite traders passed by; so the
brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites
for twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt. Genesis 37:23-28
Now the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of

39 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh,
captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him
down there. 2 The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in
the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that the LORD was with
him and that the LORD made all he did to prosper in his hand. 4 So Joseph found favor
in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he
had he put under his authority. 5 So it was, from the time that he had made him
overseer of his house and all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house
for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had in the house
and in the field. 6 Thus he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and he did not know
what he had except for the bread which he ate. Genesis 39:1-6
The Lord will not mind where you are as long as you are
faithful to Him

Then Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s

prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison. 21 But the LORD was with

Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the
prison. 22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners
who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. 23 The keeper of the
prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph’s authority,
because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made it prosper.

Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the
dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh. 15 And Pharaoh
said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. But I
have heard it said of you that you can understand a dream, to interpret it.”

So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an
answer of peace.” Genesis 41:14-16
Joseph Rise to Power: From Prison to Palace

Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no
one as discerning and wise as you. 40 You shall be [g]over my house, and all my people
shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than
you.” 41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”
42 
Then Pharaoh took his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand; and
he clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck. 43 And
he had him ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried out before him,
“Bow the knee!” So he set him over all the land of Egypt. 44 Pharaoh also said to
Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no man may lift his hand or foot in
all the land of Egypt.” 45 And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnath-Paaneah. And he
gave him as a wife Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On. So Joseph went
out over all the land of Egypt. 46 Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before
Pharaoh king of Egypt. ..
The Fulfillment of God's Promise to Joseph

So Joseph’s ten brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with
his brothers, for he said, “Lest some calamity befall him.” 5 And the sons of Israel went to buy grain among those
who journeyed, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
6 
Now Joseph was governor over the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers
came and bowed down before him with their faces to the earth. Genesis 42:3-6
 “I am Joseph!” he said to his brothers. “Is my father still alive?” But his brothers were

speechless! They were stunned to realize that Joseph was standing there in front of
them. 4 “Please, come closer,” he said to them. So they came closer. And he said again, “I am
Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into slavery in Egypt. 5 But don’t be upset, and don’t be
angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to
preserve your lives. 6 This famine that has ravaged the land for two years will last five more
years, and there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. 7 God has sent me ahead of you to keep
you and your families alive and to preserve many survivors. 8 So it was God who sent me here,
not you! And he is the one who made me an adviser to Pharaoh—the manager of his entire
palace and the governor of all Egypt.
Conclusion
-Joseph's heart beat true to God and to his brothers. He never blame them for what they
have done: Love and Forgiveness
-The Lord rescue Joseph from the lowest part of his life and bring him to the throne:
Redeemer and Rewarder.
-The Lord was with Joseph in the prison: Faithful companion and a Teacher.
-Joseph running from temptation: Fear of the Lord.
-The dream of Joseph was fulfilled about 20 years after: Promise Keeper
-The Wisdom of Joseph is the Lord Himself

But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and

Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of

God. 25 This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of
human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest
of human strength.
